Rockers Dominate Chinooks to Sweep-Four Game Series
August 6, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Ashwaubenon, Wis. - The Green Bay Rockers took down the Lakeshore Chinooks 14-1 Sunday afternoon at Capital Credit Union Park, to cap off a four-game series sweep of Lakeshore during a four-game homestand.
The Rockers took an early lead in the first and never looked back en route to the wire-to-wire victory, as they are now winners of their last four games heading into a two-game set with the Madison Mallards Monday night.
Green Bay struck first in the opening inning on a Lakeshore error that forced in a run scored for Kendal Ewell (Illinois-Chicago), as the error made it a 1-0 lead early for the Rockers heading into the second.
Cooper Kelly (Kansas) started out the second inning strong with a solo homer and after Mateo Matthews (Wagner College) scored from second, an RBI sacrifice fly from Ewell extended the Rockers lead to 4-0 going into the third at Capital Credit Union Park.
Matthews launched a three-run homer over the right field wall in the third to bump the Green Bay lead to seven, while a double steal play scored Ewell from third to make it an 8-0 game heading into the fourth.
With starting pitcher Brett Sanchez (Belhaven) cruising along on the hill, Ewell tacked on a grand slam in the fourth inning to increase the Rockers lead all the way to 13-0, after an RBI walk from Max Mims (Southwestern) helped the Rockers score five runs in all in the frame for the explosive Green Bay offense.
Sanchez finished his five scoreless innings in the fifth inning while allowing a total of just two hits, and Micah Berens (Incarnate Word) took the ball beginning in the sixth with the Rockers still in control up by 13.
Despite Berens giving up two hits in the sixth, the Chinooks left them on base as he retired the last two he faced to keep them off the board going into the seventh.
Berens threw a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning, and after throwing a scoreless eighth, Kelly hit his second solo shot of the afternoon to cap off the 14-run day for the Rockers offense, as his sixth homer of the season made it 14-0 entering the ninth in Ashwaubenon.
Even though Lakeshore scored one run in the ninth, Berens completed his fourth inning on the mound to seal the day for Green Bay, handing them their fourth consecutive win against the Chinooks in the final regular season meeting between the two teams.
The Rockers will continue their four-game homestand Monday night against the Madison Mallards with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. from Capital Credit Union Park.
The pregame concert performed by Hannah Rose will begin at 5:30 p.m. with it also being Free Hot Dog Monday at the ballpark. This means that hot dogs will be free for the first 90 minutes after gates open at 5:30.
