New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Bowie's Joe Mahoney had two triples and four RBI to lead the Baysox to a 12-8 victory over the Rock Cats before 5,741 fans on Sunday afternoon.
The two teams combined for 28 hits, with Bowie leading the way with 16. Eight of the nine players in the Bowie starting lineup had at least one hit with seven turning in multi-hit games.
The Baysox jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning against Rock Cats starter Deinys Suarez. LJ Hoes reached base on a two-out walk and Joe Mahoney followed with a line drive triple into right field to score Hoes.
The lead didn't last long, though, as the Rock Cats scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Brian Dozier started the inning off with a base hit to left field and moved to third on Yangervis Solarte's double. Bowie's Richard Zagone then plunked Joe Benson with a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Chris Parmelee delivered a single to right to plate Dozier and Benson for the 2-1 lead. Benson later scored on a force out grounder off the bat of Evan Bigley.
Suarez recorded two quick outs to start the second. Steven Lerud then laced a single into center field. Ronnie Welty then worked a walk before Xavier Avery singled to left to score Lerud and make it a one run game.
The Baysox then tied it up in the third when Suarez loaded up the bases on two base hits and a walk before unleashing a wild pitch that allowed Joe Mahoney to score from third. In the bottom of the inning, the Rock Cats answered back yet again. Benson led off with a ground-rule double to left field scored on Deibinson Romero's one-out single.
Both teams matched each other with two runs apiece in the fifth inning. Bowie's Brandon Waring's RBI double tied the game before he scored on a single by Caleb Joseph that put the Baysox on top, 5-4. In the bottom of the inning, Romero slugged a two-run homer over the left field wall to tie the game once again.
Bowie broke out for three runs in the sixth inning against reliever Andrew Albers, including the go-ahead RBI by Mahoney on a force out ground ball to shortstop. Waring followed with an RBI triple and scored on a single by Joseph.
The Baysox struck for three more runs against Brett Jacobson in the eighth inning, highlighted by Mahoney's two-run triple.
The Rock Cats threatened in the bottom of the eighth against former Rock Cat Armando Gabino. Gabino walked Chris Cates and with one out fired a wild pitch that allowed Cates to move to second. Solarte (3-for-5) followed by drilling a single into center field to knock in Cates. Benson lined a single to second to move Solarte into scoring position and bring Parmelee to the plate but Gabino struck out Parmelee and forced Romero to pop out to the catcher to end the inning.
Suarez finished with five runs on eight hits and four walks in five innings of work. Albers (2-1) suffered the loss for the Rock Cats. Wynn Pelzer (5-7) picked up the win for Bowie with one hit and one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: 1B Joe Mahoney went 3-for-6 with two triples and four RBI for Bowie. He also scored three runs.
