New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Bowie scored three runs in the eighth inning without ever recording a hit to erase a Rock Cats' comeback and give the Baysox an 8-6 victory on Thursday night.

The Baysox drew two consecutive walks against Tony Davis (1-2) to open the eighth inning. First baseman Chris Parmelee then fielded a ball off the bat of Joseph Mahoney and tossed the ball to first but no one was covering yet. Parmelee was charged with an error and Tyler Henson scored from second to tie the game. Loek Van Mil took over on the mound for the `Cats and forced to fly outs before issuing a free pass to Greg Miclat to put runners on first and second. The Rock Cats' second throwing error of the inning - this time by third baseman Yancarlos Ortiz - allowed two runs to score and put the Baysox ahead.

The Rock Cats got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Leadoff man Joe Benson - who was moved up in the lineup shortly before game time - singled to left field. Benson was penciled in to leadoff after outfielder Ben Revere, who had been activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, was a last-minute scratch from the lineup. Estarlin De Los Santos followed with a base hit to center to put runners on the corners. Parmelee then lined a single into center to score Benson for the 1-0 advantage. Steve Singleton added a two-out RBI single.

Rock Cats starter Steve Hirschfeld held the Baysox scoreless until the third inning when a few miscues led to a four-run inning. Hirschfeld started off the inning with a walk but Jonathan Tucker was thrown out at second by Jeff Howell on a stolen base attempt. Xavier Nady gave the Baysox another base runner with a single and moved to second when Hirschfeld misfired a pickoff attempt to first. Avery then moved to third on a passed ball by Howell and scored on a base hit by Ryan Adams that put the Baysox on the board, 2-1. Joel Guzman slugged a three-run homer - his 30th of the year - later in the inning.

Guzman added an RBI single in the fifth to put Bowie on top, 5-2.

The Rock Cats clawed back in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Ortiz. Mark Dolenc then scored on a wild pitch for the second run of the inning. The Rock Cats' comeback continued into the seventh when Parmelee drilled a triple into right to knock in De Los Santos to tie the game. Juan Portes added a sacrifice fly RBI that put the `Cats back on top, 6-5.

Wynn Pelzer (1-0) picked up the win in relief. Jose Diaz fired two shutout innings to closeout the game and notch his first save of the season.
