CHARLOTTE TO HANDLE: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 3rd game of their 4-game series at Charlotte (White Sox), continuing an 8-game roadtrip that started by losing 3 of 4 at Gwinnett (Braves) and splitting the first 2 games of this series. The Red Wings return home on Friday for an 8-game homestand that includes a pair of 4-game series with Columbus (Indians) and Norfolk (Orioles).
a Both Friday's and Saturday's games with Columbus, the 2-time defending Triple-A champions, will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS) television.
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees share the downtown ballpark with the Red Wings. EVEN STEVEN: The Red Wings yesterday snapped their 4-game losing streak with a 7-4 win at Charlotte. The victory also snapped a 4-game losing streak at Knights Stadium. Rochester has been playing .500 baseball beginning May 15, going 7-7 in that time. The Wings are also 12-16 in May after going 9-14 in April. If the Wings win their final 2 games in May, they would post their most victories in a month since going 20-20 in August/September 2009.
a Rochester is 21-30 through 51 games for the 2nd year in a row. The 2011 club lost its 52nd game, a 7-2 setback vs. Norfolk.
a The Red Wings last night hit a season-high 3 home runs, including 2 from Michael Hollimon. Rochester had previously hit 3 or more homers in a game July 23, 2011, when Jeff Bailey, Rene Rivera (2), and Dustin Martin hit a combined 4 at Indianapolis (Pirates). Hollimon's 2-homer game was Rochester's first since Rivera's effort that same day.
CALLING ALL STARS: Online voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the International League and the Pacific Coast League, will be played July 11 at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. a Leading Red Wings candidates include Anthony Slama, owner of 8 saves, a 0.42 ERA, and a 16.0 consecutive scoreless innings streak; and Matt Carson, who leads Rochester with a .293 average, 48 hits, 17 extra-base hits, 14 doubles, 14 RBI, 69 total bases, and 22 runs scored.
HEY, WHERE'D YOU GO?: M ore than half of the Red Wings' 21 wins have come from pitchers who are no longer with the club. Cole DeVries (one), Scott Diamond (4), Jeff Manship (4), and P.J. Walters (3) combined to win 12 games before getting their promotions to the Minnesota Twins. Tonight's starter, Liam Hendriks, is tied with reliever Esmerling Vasquez for the current Red Wings lead with 3 victories.
OH, DEAR: The Red Wings rank last in the IL with 162 runs scored, 16 behind the next closest team Lehigh Valley (Phillies) with 178. They are 108 runs behind IL leader Pawtucket (Red Sox) with 270. In fact, Rochester went hitless in a resounding 24 consecutive at-bats with runners in scoring position until Matt Carson's 2-run double in the 4th inning last night at Charlotte scored Danny Valencia from third and Chris Parmelee from second.
