Rochester Red Wings News Release
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #72 - HOME GAME #33 - 7:05 P.M.
DURHAM BULLS (32-41) at ROCHESTER RED WINGS (32-39)
RHP SHANE DYER (1-3, 6.23) vs. RHP COLE DE VRIES (2-5, 4.53)
TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 3rd game of their 4-game series vs. Durham (Rays) after losing the first 2 contests 6-1 and 8-2. The Wings and Bulls will play the series finale tomorrow and then get together again July 20-23 in North Carolina. Following tomorrow's matinee, the Red Wings will welcome International League South Division leader Charlotte (White Sox) to town for a 4-game series Friday-Monday.
ROSTER MOVES: The Red Wings today placed right-handed pitchers Carlos Gutierrez and Lester Oliveros on the 7-Day Disabled List with a right shoulder and right elbow injury, respectively. Gutierrez also missed 34 games from April 18-May 25 while on the DL with a strained right shoulder labrum.
a To replace them on the 25-man roster, righthander Bobby Lanigan and lefthander Caleb Thielbar were promoted from Double-A New Britain. Lanigan was selected by the Twins in the 3rd round of the 2008 draft. Thielbar was signed by the Twins last August out of St. Paul of the independent American Association.
MEET ME HALFWAY: The Red Wings tonight reach the official halfway point of the 2012 season. The club hasn't had a winning record at this juncture since 2007, when it went 39-33. Even with a loss tonight, the Red Wings would post their best halfway record since 2009, when they went 34-38. The list to 2007:
Season Record Finish
2012 32-39 (+ tonight) ???
2011 29-43 53-91
2010 29-43 49-95
2009 34-38 70-74
2008 31-41 74-70
2007 39-33 77-67
a The Red Wings are 18-16 in their last 34 games beginning May 15 and 23-23 beginning May 3. They have lost 3 of their last 4 and 6 of their last 9, however.
BOYS OF SUMMER NOW BOYS OF SUMMER: The 2012 campaign is just about half over and summer hasn't even officially kicked in. The summer solstice occurs tonight at 7:09 shortly after the first pitch. Including tonight, the Red Wings will play 40 games at Frontier Field during the summer.
a A quick shoutout to former Indianapolis Indian Champ Summers, who was named Minor League Player of the Year by The Sporting News in 1978 after batting .368 with an American Association-leading 34 homers and a league-best 124 RBI. He missed out on the Triple Crown after finishing 2nd in batting to Springfield's Dane Iorg, who hit .371. Summers played 11 seasons in the majors with Oakland (1974), Chicago Cubs (1975-76), Cincinnati (1977-79), Detroit (1979-81), San Francisco (1982-83), and San Diego (1984).
a Other former big leaguers worth mentioning are Ed Summers, who played for Detroit from 1908-12, and Kid Summers, who appeared in 2 games with St. Louis in 1893. Kid is a native of Toronto. We'll also throw in Homer Summa (as if you're saying his last name with a Boston accent). He played 10 years in the majors with Pittsburgh (1920), Cleveland (1922-27), and Philadelphia (1929-30).
ENOUGH'S ENOUGH: The Red Wings have lost 2 straight games at Frontier Field for the first time since getting swept in a 3-game series vs. Syracuse (Nationals) April 24-26. That also accounts for the Red Wings' last series defeat at home. The club would have to win tonight and tomorrow to avoid their first series setback at Frontier since that sweep.
a Despite last night's loss, the Red Wings are still 22-18 at Frontier Field, including an 18-14 mark as the home team.
HEADING SOUTH: The Red Wings are 8-10 against teams in the IL South Division, including a 2-2 mark at division-leader Charlotte. The Wings have already concluded their 8-game season series against Gwinnett, going 3-5. Rochester posted an 11-21 record against the IL South in 2011.
a The Red Wings are in the midst of playing 40 consecutive games against teams outside the IL North Division. They are 18-16 in the stretch thus far. The Wings opened the season with 37 consecutive games against North foes, going 14-23 in those contests. Their final 14 games leading into the All-Star break are against North rivals.
HOMER HAPPY: The Red Wings have homered in a season-high 6 straight games. Wilkin Ramirez hit a 2-run blast in the 7th inning yesterday vs. Durham to extend the run. The Wings last homered in at least 7 straight games July 16-26, 2009, when they went 10 games in a row with a homer.
a The Red Wings have already homered 14 times in 18 games in June after hitting 15 homers in 30 games in May.
a The Red Wings have hit 39 home runs overall, tied with Lehigh Valley for the 2nd-lowest total in the league. Only Indianapolis (Pirates) has hit less with 37.
a Clete Thomas and Michael Hollimon are tied for the team lead with 5 home runs. That is the lowest team-leading total in the IL. Lehigh Valley has the 2nd-lowest team-leading total of 7 from Cody Overbeck.
START ME UP: Only one Red Wings' starter in the last 9 games has pitched past the 5th inning. Tonight's starter, Cole De Vries, turned the trick with 7.0 scoreless innings in Rochester's 4-1 win at Louisville Friday. Red Wings' starters have an 9.27 ERA (34 ER/33.0 IP) in the last 9 contests.
a Wings' starters are 18-22 with a 4.09 ERA (160 ER/351.2 IP) overall.
CALLING ALL STARS: Voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the IL and the Pacific Coast League, will be played July 11 at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. Fans can vote by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com and clicking on the "Fan Zone" tab through Friday.
a The leading Red Wings' candidate is Matt Carson, who leads the team with 63 hits, 17 doubles, 25 RBI, 32 runs, and 65 games played.
