ROCHESTER RED WINGS (13-17) at PAWTUCKET RED SOX (20-12)
RHP LIAM HENDRIKS (NR) vs. RHP ROSS OHLENDORF (3-2, 4.29)
ON THE RHODE AGAIN: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 2nd game of their 4-game series at Pawtucket (Red Sox), continuing their 8-game road trip that also includes a stop at Syracuse (Nationals) Friday-Monday. The team then returns home for an 8-game homestand against Louisville (Reds) and Gwinnett (Braves) May 15-22, including the nationally-televised May 22 game on MLB Network.
a The Red Wings are nearing the end of a stretch of playing their first 37 games against International League North Division opponents. Next Tuesday, the Wings play outside the division for the first time when they host Louisville.
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 25 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees use the downtown ballpark as a temporary home while PNC Field in Moosic, PA undergoes a season-long renovation. Tonight at the ballpark for the Yankees-Columbus Clippers game:
a Hosted organization in suite: Honor Flight Rochester, which honors America's World War II veterans by flying them to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial
a Spikes and Mittsy appearance: Cobbles Elementary (Penfield, NY)
a Raffle items: Rochester Americans T.J. Brennan and Paul Szczechura autographed bat used during batting practice last week, Travis Hafner autographed baseball, Justin Masterson autographed baseball, Ben Revere autographed baseball, Brett Gardner autographed baseball
ROSTER NEWS: With the addition of Sean Burroughs, Pedro Florimon, and Clete Thomas, 33 players have now appeared in at least one game for the Red Wings. Righthander Liam Hendriks tonight will become the 34th player used by the club when he gets the start at Pawtucket.
a Hendriks will become the 15th pitcher and the 9th different starter for Rochester. The 23-year-old was optioned to the Red Wings following the Twins game on Sunday.
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END: The Red Wings' season-high 4-game winning streak came to an end last night with a 4-0 loss at Pawtucket. It was their longest winning streak since a 5-gamer August 10-14, 2010 (streak started with the 2nd game of a doubleheader on August 10).
a Rochester last night was shut out for the 2nd time, also putting up a zero in a 2-0 setback against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field on April 18.
a The Red Wings have yet to alternate wins and losses, always winning or losing at least 2 in a row. A win tonight would end that streak.
LET'S RE-LIVE THAT OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 29 games. In the 6 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 5-1. They are 8-16 in their other 24 games.
a The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 88 runs, 21 fewer than the next closest team: Durham (Rays) with 109. The league leader is Pawtucket, which has plated 165 runs.
D'OH!!: The Red Wings have gone a season-high 8 straight games without a home run. Rochester's last homer came from Joe Benson on April 28 in a 4-3 loss at Buffalo. Despite the drought, the Wings are 4-4 in the last 8 games.
a The Red Wings last went 8 games in a row without a homer May 24-June 1, 2010. The team went 2-6 during that stretch, which ended when Brock Peterson homered June 2 vs. Norfolk (Orioles) of Troy Patton.
a The Red Wings last went 9 consecutive games without a long ball prior to 2005 (search ended due to time constraints). Rochester did, however, have one other 8-game homer drought in the last 8 seasons: April 10-17, 2009.
a The Red Wings have hit a league-low 10 homers, one fewer than the next closest teams Durham and Indianapolis (Pirates) with 11.
DARIN GO: Darin Mastroianni is batting .371 (26-for-70) in 18 games since joining the Red Wings from Double-A New Britain April 14, ranking 2nd in the International League in that time behind only Columbus' Matt LaPorta (.387, 24-for-62).
a Mastroianni has a team-best 8 stolen bases as well, which is tied for 6th in the IL. The outfielder also has a team-best 9 multi-hit games, one more than the recently promoted Brian Dozier.
a Speaking of Dozier, the Twins shortstop made his major league debut last night against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at Target Field. Dozier got an 8th-inning single after going hitless in his first 3 at-bats. The Mississippi native celebrates his 25th birthday next Tuesday.
THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 1984, Twins great Kirby Puckett makes his major league debut, collecting 4 hits in a 5-0 win at the California Angels...in 1968, Athletics great Catfish Hunter pitches a perfect game against the Twins in Oakland, winning 4-0.
