Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - Buffalo right-hander Matt Harvey fired 6.0 scoreless innings, leading the Bisons to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Gwinnett Braves on Tuesday night at Coolray Field. Single runs in the first, second and third innings off right-hander Eric Junge sent the G-Braves to their fifth loss in the last six games.
Harvey (W, 3-1), the No. 4 prospect in the New York Mets' system according to Baseball America, was lights out for the Bisons. The right-hander allowed no runs on five hits and struck out six while walking three. He threw 96 pitches, 56 for strikes in the victory.
The Bisons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed. Fred Lewis walked and scored on an RBI single by Zach Lutz. Josh Satin tried to follow Lewis home, but G-Braves' centerfielder Luis Durango threw a strike to catcher Jose Yepez to catch him at the plate. It was Durango's team-leading third outfield assist of the season.
Omar Quintanilla blasted a solo home run in the second, his fifth of the season, to boost the Buffalo lead to 2-0. The Bisons added one more in the third and that would be all they needed as both teams were unable to score the rest of the evening.
Junge (L, 3-3) lost despite pitching his fourth-straight quality start for Gwinnett. The 34-year-old right-hander yielded three runs, two earned, on five hits over 6.0 innings, walked three and struck out a season-high six. Right-handers Anthony Varvaro and Adam Russell combined on 3.0 scoreless innings to keep the game in reach.
Buffalo right-handers Jack Egbert and Fernando Cabrera (S, 8) kept the shutout in-tact with 3.0 scoreless innings following Harvey's departure.
The Gwinnett offense combined for seven total hits in the game with Jose Constanza and Drew Sutton accounting for four of them. Constanza finished the game going 2-for-3 with a walk, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Sutton went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Gwinnett Braves (19-12) and Buffalo Bisons (19-13) continue their series on Wednesday night at Coolray Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Left-hander Yohan Flande (1-1, 2.96) will get the nod for the G-Braves while Buffalo will counter with right-hander Jeurys Familia (2-1, 5.06). Listen to the broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.
