ROCHESTER RED WINGS GAME NOTES
THURSDAY, MAY 3, 2012 w FRONTIER FIELD
GAME #26 - ROAD GAME #14 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (9-16) at EMPIRE STATE YANKEES (14-10)
LHP LUKE FRENCH (NR) vs. RHP RAMON ORTIZ (0-2, 5.09)
YANKEE DOODLE WENT TO TOWN: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play the 3rd game of their 4-game series against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field. Following tomorrow's series finale, the Wings "return home" for a brief 2-game set vs. Buffalo (Mets). Then it's back on the road for the first of 5 season-long 8-game roadtrips that includes stops at Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Syracuse (Nationals).
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees use the downtown ballpark as a temporary home while PNC Field in Moosic, PA undergoes a season-long renovation. Today at the ballpark:
aHosted organization in suite: Open Door Mission
aSpikes and Mittsy appearance: Plank South Elementary (Webster)
aRaffle items: Bill Buckner autographed bat, Jose Canseco autographed baseball, Joe Benson autographed baseball, Dellin Betances autographed baseball
ROSTER INFO: The Red Wings thus far have employed the services of 29 players, including 16 position players and 13 pitchers. Luke French tonight becomes the 30th player, the 14th pitcher, and the 7th starting pitcher used by the team when he takes the mound against Empire State. French was promoted from Double-A New Britain Tuesday after starter Samuel Deduno was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List with right shoulder tendinitis.
aSix different players have been placed on the DL and 5 are currently inactive (for complete list see Page 12 of game notes).
aOnly 2 Red Wings have been recalled to the Twins one month into the season: Drew Butera and Ben Revere, who has since returned to Rochester. One year ago today, the Twins had already recalled 8 players, including Luke Hughes, Alex Burnett, Steve Holm, Jim Hoey, Eric Hacker, Rene Tosoni, Anthony Swarzak, and Alex Burnett. Not only that, 2 more were on the way May 4, 2011: Trevor Plouffe and Revere.
NOT-SO ELITE EIGHT: The Red Wings yesterday lost their 8th game in a row. They have also lost 10 of their last 12 and 14 of their last 18 since opening the season 5-2. At 9-16, the Wings are off to their worst 25-game start since the 2001 club went 8-17. Rochester that year won their 26th game, a 4-3 victory at Indianapolis (Brewers) to improve to 9-17.
aRochester's 8-game skid is their longest losing streak since a franchise-worst 12-game losing streak August 23-September 3, 2010. The 12-game stretch has actually happened on 3 occasions in the history of professional baseball in Rochester, including July 24-August 5, 2002 and sometime in 1920, when the Hustlers lost 12 straight.
aThe 8-game losing streak is the longest such current streak in the International League. It is not, however, the longest losing streak the league has seen this year. Durham lost 13 straight April 16-29.
NOTHING GREAT ABOUT EIGHT: Speaking of the No. 8, the Red Wings have been outscored 27-6 in the 8th inning. In the last 7 games alone, Rochester has given up 15 runs in the 8th, 12 of which have come via 5 home runs. Red Wings pitchers have given up 6 homers in the 8th inning overall.
MAY DAY!: The Red Wings have lost their first 2 games in May for the first time since the 2002 club lost 4 in a row to open the month. The club that year lost 5-4 and 13-4 vs. Toledo (Tigers) and 2-1 and 3-2 at Indianapolis (Brewers).
aThe Wings haven't posted a winning calendar month since August 2009, when they went 17-15.
LET'S RE-LIVE THAT OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 24 games. In the 5 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 4-1. They are 5-15 in their other 20 games.
aThe Red Wings have scored an International League-low 74 runs, 17 fewer than the next closest team: Norfolk (Orioles) with 91. The league leader is Toledo (Tigers), which has plated 139 runs, 65 more than Rochester.
aThe Wings have been held to 3 runs or less in 6 straight games.
aThe Wings are hitting just .183 (11-for-60) with runners in scoring position during their 8-game losing streak, including a 1-for-5 mark last night at Empire State. They are hitting .222 (46-for-207) in such cases overall.
COMPETITIVE BASEBALL: Twenty one of the Red Wings' 25 games have been decided by 3 runs or less. The Wings last night fell to 3-5 in one-run games, including 4 straight losses.
aThe Red Wings rank 7th in the IL with a 3.75 ERA, but have given up 21 home runs. Only 4 teams have surrendered more: Columbus (28), Durham (25), Indianapolis (25), and Syracuse (22).
BEN'S BIRTHDAY IS WHEN?: Ben Revere today celebrates his 24th birthday. The outfielder is 3-for-11 (.273) with a double, RBI, walk, stolen base, and run scored on his special day during his pro career. Since going 3-for-5 on his birthday in 2008 with Single-A Beloit, however, he is 0-for-5 with a walk in his last 2 birthday games. Revere did not play on his birthday last year.
