Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - The longest winning streak of the season for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (14-11) came to an end at five as the Rochester Red Wings (10-16) gave the Yankees a taste of their own medicine with a 4-3 come from behind win at Frontier Field on Thursday night. Rochester snapped a season high eight game losing streak with the one run win.
The Red Wings got on the board against SWB starter Dellin Betances with a single run as the right hander allowed a first inning run for his second consecutive start. A lead off single by Darin Mastroianni followed by a ground out put the Wings lead off man at second with one down. A passed ball moved up Mastroianni to third and Rene Tosoni's ground out to second, got the run home for a 1-0 lead.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would take the lead back in their first at bat, on a two run single with two down by Brandon Laird. Rochester starter Luke French walked Kevin Russo to lead off the game and with one out walked Dewayne Wise to put runners on first and second. French helped out with a wild pitch that moved both runners 90 feet closer to scoring. After a Steve Pearce foul pop to first, Laird laced a single in between short and third scoring both runners for a 2-1 SWB lead.
Rochester tied the game in the top of the second inning off Betances, as Mastroianni was once again in the middle of a run producing inning. With two down and no one on, Mastroianni hit a come backer to Betances who fielded and fired to first. Laird however missed the ball at first base and Mastroianni who appeared as if he was going to be the third out of a 1,2,3 inning instead ended up at third on the three base error. Ben Revere's single to left scored Mastroianni to tie the game at 2-2.
Laird was at it again in the Yankees fourth with his second hit and his third run batted in on the night. With one down facing French, he hit a line shot over the wall in left for his second homer of the season and a 2 for 2, 3 RBI night against the lefty. Heading into the game on Thursday, Laird was hitting .393 (11-28) against left handers and just .185 (10-54) against right handers. The solo shot put the Yankees back on top at 3-2.
The Red Wings would tie the game for the second time of the night in the top of the fifth with their third run of the night off Betances, an RBI single from Aaron Bates that scored former SWB Yankee Matt Carson to knot the game at 3-3.
The game stayed deadlocked until the eighth inning when Mastroianni got in the middle of it again. Facing Yankees reliever Adam Miller (LP, 0-1), Rochester opened the inning with a Bates single to right field, he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and was replaced by pinch runner Joe Benson, who went to third on a Rene Rivera ground out. Mastroianni hit a chopper to third which was charged by Steve Pearce. His throw to first was late and got away from Laird and the infield single scored Benson with the go ahead run.
Jeff Manship (WP, 2-0) who came in out of the Red Wing pen replacing French retired the first nine hitters that he faced before allowing his only base runner on a one out walk in the ninth inning. The Wings went to closer Anthony Slamma (SV, 5) who did his job striking out Laird swinging and Cole Garner looking to end the game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continues its stretch of 18 consecutive games as the up the "home" team, with game four of a four game series with the Rochester Red Wings on Friday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch. Right hander Ramon Ortiz (0-2, 5.09 ERA) gets the start for the Yankees while the Red Wings will send lefty Scott Diamond (4-1, 2.84 ERA) to the hill.
