Rochester Red Wings News Release
THURSDAY, JUNE 14, 2012 w LOUISVILLE SLUGGER FIELD
GAME #66 - ROAD GAME #36 - 7:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (29-36) at LOUISVILLE BATS (21-46)
LHP LUKE FRENCH (1-1, 4.03) vs. LHP RYAN FEIERABEND (0-1, 14.54)
SEEING RED: The Rochester Red Wings tonight continue their 8-game, 9-day roadtrip with the opener of a 4-game series at Louisville (Reds). The Red Wings started the trip by losing 3 of 4 at Indianapolis (Pirates) before taking yesterday off. This marks Rochester's longest roadtrip of the season. It has 4 other 8-game trips, but all are 8 days long. The Wings return home Monday for an 8-game stay with 4-game series vs. Durham (Rays) and Charlotte (White Sox).
a Buffalo Bills Nick Barnett and Brian Moorman will sign autographs prior to Monday's game at Frontier Field from 6:00-6:50 p.m.
ROSTER NEWS: The Minnesota Twins recalled right-handed pitcher Lester Oliveros following yesterday's game vs. Philadelphia. The 24-year-old is in his 6th pro season, his 2nd in the Twins' organization after being acquired in the Delmon Young trade with Detroit on August 16, 2011 . Oliveros went 1-1 with 4 saves and a 4.08 ERA in 12 games with the Red Wings after being promoted from Double-A New Britain May 15.
a Oliveros is the 10th player, the 5th pitcher, to be promoted to the Twins. He appeared in 10 games with Minnesota in 2011, posting no record and a 4.05 ERA. Oliveros replaces righthander P.J. Walters, who today went on the 15-Day Disabled List with right shoulder inflammation.
THAT STINGS: The Red Wings were shut out in their last 2 games at Indianapolis, 16-0 and 2-0, for their first back-to-back shut-out losses since April 16-17, 2009, when they succumbed 1-0 vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox) and 11-0 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees). Including the final 6 innings Sunday at Indianapolis, the Red Wings have gone 24 consecutive innings without scoring.
a Monday's 16-0 setback at Indianapolis was the Red Wings' worst defeat since dropping a 21-4 decision August 15, 2000 vs. Pawtucket. It also was Rochester's worst shut-out loss since at least 1971 (the search goes on through the team's scrapbooks with newspaper box scores). It also marked the International League's biggest shutout since April 6, 2007, when Syracuse (Blue Jays) won 16-0 at Durham.
a The Red Wings have been shut out 7 times in 2012, including 6 times in a 9-inning game. Only Durham (9) and Indianapolis (8) have been shut out more.
a The Red Wings were shut out twice in one series for the first time since April 19-21, 2008 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (1-0 in the first game of the 3-game series and 3-0 in the finale).
a The Red Wings tonight look to avoid being shut out in 3 straight games for the first time since August 30-31, 2002, when they fell 5-0 at Buffalo (Indians) August 30 and 1-0 and 4-0 in an August 31 doubleheader at Ottawa (Expos).
SERIES RECAP: The Red Wings lost 3 of 4 games at Indianapolis to start the roadtrip, getting outscored 26-3. It marked their first series setback since dropping 3 of 4 at Gwinnett (Braves) May 24-27. After winning the series opener at Indianapolis, the Red Wings dropped the last 3 games for their first losing streak since a 4-game skid May 25-28.
a Despite losing 3 in a row, the Red Wings are 15-13 in their last 28 games beginning May 15 and are 20-20 beginning May 3.
a Rochester is 18-26 against teams with a current winning record and 11-10 against clubs with a current losing record. The Wings are just 7-20 in true road games as well.
EXTRA! EXTRA!: The Red Wings on Tuesday failed to record an extra-base hit for the first time in 39 games. The 38-game streak was their longest such streak since another 38-gamer July 31-September 5, 2009. The 38-game tear had been the longest active streak in the IL. Toledo (Tigers) now holds that distinction with 21 consecutive games with at least one extra-base hit.
RISPY BUSINESS: The Red Wings went just 1-for-22 (.045) with runners in scoring position in the 4-game series at Indianapolis, going hitless in their final 18 such at-bats. Rene Rivera's RBI single in the 6th on Saturday is the lone such hit in the last 4 games. Rochester is batting .178 (13-for-73) with men in scoring position in June. Five of the 13 hits came Friday vs. Norfolk.
a Rochester is hitting .222 (117-for-526) with runners in scoring position overall, the 3rd-lowest mark in the IL. Only Louisville (.208, 119-for-571) and Durham (.211, 111-for-527) have lower averages.
a The Red Wings rank last in the league with 205 runs scored, 27 behind the next closest team Durham, which has 232.
LUKE HERE: Tonight's starter, Luke French, is the only starting pitcher other than Liam Hendriks to post a win in the Red Wings' last 21 games beginning May 22. The victory came in the first game of a June 2 doubleheader vs. Columbus. Hendriks is 3-0 with a 1.95 ERA (6 ER/27.2 IP) in 4 starts in that time while the rest of the staff is 1-5 with a 4.41 ERA (34 ER/69.1 IP) in 17 starts.
a Red Wings' starters are 17-19 with a 3.72 ERA (135 ER/326.2 IP) overall. There have been 14 different starters used by manager Gene Glynn. Only Norfolk has used more in the IL with 16. The Red Wings in 2011 used 18 different starters.
CALLING ALL STARS: Voting for the 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game is underway. The game, featuring the IL and the Pacific Coast League, will be played July 11 at Buffalo's Coca-Cola Field. Fans can vote by visiting RedWingsBaseball.com and clicking on the "Fan Zone" tab through June 22. Red Wings' candidates are Matt Carson, who leads the team with a .284 batting average, 56 hits, 16 doubles, 19 RBI, 82 total bases, 24 walks, and 59 games played; and Anthony Slama, who has a 0.40 ERA, a team-leading 9 saves, and 37 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. He is currently on the 7-Day Disabled List with a right leg contusion.
