Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - Russ Canzler's sixth-inning grand slam led the Columbus Clippers to a 4-0 win over the Gwinnett Braves in the first game of a four-game series on Thursday night at Coolray Field. With the loss, Gwinnett has now lost 11 of their last 14 games, including three of four against the Clippers in 2012.

Jair Jurrjens (L, 3-4) surrendered all four of his earned runs on Canzler's bases-loaded blast. Jurrjens allowed seven hits over 6.2 innings, walked two and struck out three in his 110-pitch effort. He nearly got out of the jam as his 1-2 pitch to Canzler was close, but called for ball two. Canzler capitalized on his next pitch, drilling the 2-2 offering over the centerfield wall to score himself, Cord Phelps, Jared Goedert and Tim Fedroff.

Left-hander Jose Lugo pitched perfectly for 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball in relief of Jurrjens, keeping the G-Braves within four runs of the Clippers. However, the offense was non-existent against Columbus pitching all night, totaling just six hits. Tyler Pastornicky extended his hitting streak to seven games as he went 1-for-4. Ernesto Mejia also recorded a hit in the game, extending his hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-4 night.

Cory Kluber (W, 5-6) was solid for 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball for the Clippers. The right-hander allowed just four hits and struck out five while walking just one. Dan Wheeler worked 2.0 scoreless frames and struck out two without yielding a walk after the departure of Kluber.

Canzler finished 1-for-4 with the grand slam, his fourth home run of the season, and four RBIs. Phelps had the only multi-hit game for either side, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The game, initially scheduled as a doubleheader starting at 5:05 PM, was changed to a nine-inning game as a result of Columbus's travel issues. Those same issues forced a 54 minute delay before the first pitch, which was officially at 7:59 PM.

The Gwinnett Braves (35-32) and Columbus Clippers (31-35) will play a doubleheader at Coolray Field on Friday night, first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:05 PM. The doubleheader will consist of two seven-inning contests separated by a half-hour break, with Gwinnett to act as the home team in game one and the road team in game two. Right-handers Todd Redmond (5-4, 3.52) and Eric Junge (3-6, 4.54) will start for the G-Braves, while the Clippers counter with left-hander Chris Seddon (7-3, 3.59) and right-hander Zach McAllister (4-2, 2.98). Both games will be broadcast on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM in Gainesville, GA with Tony Schiavone calling the play-by-play.

Friday is Planes, Trains and Automobiles Night at Coolray Field, so come out and enjoy our transportation theme night including various prize drawings from gas cards to Marta passes. Friday also features Fox 5 Friday Fireworks. Stick around after the game for another spectacular post-game fireworks display, courtesy of WAGA Fox 5 Atlanta.
