HAVE YOU HERD THE NEWS?: The Rochester Red Wings tonight begin a 5-game series and roadtrip at Buffalo (Mets), trailing International League Wild Card-leading Lehigh Valley (Phillies) by 4.5 games with 10 to play. The Red Wings went a combined 2-4 against Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Lehigh Valley this week, splitting a 2-game set at McCoy Stadium before dropping 2 of 3 against the IronPigs at Frontier Field. This 5-game series includes a doubleheader Sunday, making up an April 30 rainout at Coca-Cola Field. After an offday Wednesday, the Red Wings return home Thursday for a 2-game set against the same Bisons.
a All but one of Rochester's final 10 games can be seen on Time Warner Cable Sports (TWCS) Channel 26. The lone exception is September 1, when Syracuse University opens its football season against Northwestern University.
a The Wings are 7 games into a stretch of playing their final 17 contests against IL North opponents and they are 2-5 thus far. Rochester is just 27-43 against its division rivals overall. The Wings went 40-24 outside the IL North.
ROSTER NEWS: Righthander Kyle Gibson has been transferred to Triple-A Rochester from Single-A Fort Myers and tonight makes his first Triple-A appearance since having "Tommy John" ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow last September. Gibson, who was selected by the Twins in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2009 draft, made 9 rehab appearances with the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Twins and then 2 starts with Fort Myers before joining the Twins' top farm club.
a Gibson tonight becomes the 18th different starting pitcher used by the Red Wings, matching their total from all of last year.
TURNAROUND TIME: The Red Wings have lost 3 of their last 4, 6 of their last 8, and tonight look to avoid falling below .500 for the first time since July 31, when they were 55-56 after a 10-8 win in 12 innings at Columbus (Indians).
a The Red Wings in 2012 are looking for their first winning season since the 2008 club went 74-70. Rochester needs to win 6 of its final 10 games to finish above .500.
a Rochester is 8-11 since their season-best 7-game winning streak July 29-August 5. Despite the recent downturn, the Red Wings are still 47-37 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 53-44 beginning May 15.
AT HOME ON THE ROAD: The Red Wings tonight begin a stretch of playing 7 of their final 10 games on the road. Rochester is just 25-32 in games away from Frontier Field, but they have won 9 of their last 11 on the road and 13 of their last 19 away from Frontier. The Wings are 0-3 at Buffalo and 2-4 at Syracuse, however, the 2 remaining road cities left on the 2012 docket.
a In fact, the Red Wings enter tonight's game with a 9-game losing streak at Coca-Cola Field. There were last victorious here in the 2nd game of an April 19, 2011 doubleheader, a 2-0 triumph in 7 innings thanks to Trevor Plouffe's first-inning 2-run homer.
a Rochester is 5-19 at Coca-Cola Field since the start of the 2010 season.
a The Red Wings have just 3 games remaining at Frontier Field, where they are 42-35. The 42 wins along Morrie Silver Way are the club's most since going 46-26 in 2008. The Wing host Syracuse (Nationals) on Labor Day, the final day of the regular season.
A BAD RUN: The Red Wings have scored just 6 runs in their last 4 games and 15 runs in their last 6 contests. In that 6-game span, the Red Wings have been shut out 3 times and held to one run once. Rochester is batting only .155 (28-for-181) in its last 6 games, including a .125 mark (4-for-32) with runners in scoring position. The Wings have scored 87 runs in 23 games in August, an average of 3.8 per game.
a The Red Wings are batting .229 (181-for-789) in August, their lowest average of any calendar month, slightly below April's .236 average (175-for-743). The Wings, however, have hit 21 home runs in August, tied for the 3rd most in the IL in that time with Columbus and 2 behind leaders Durham (Rays) and Empire State (Yankees).
a Chris Parmelee leads the IL with 8 homers in August.
DOING ITS PART: The Red Wings' bullpen has allowed only 4 runs (3 earned) in 15.1 innings in the last 4 games for a 1.76 ERA in that time. Rochester relievers have a 3.61 ERA (204 ER/509.0 IP) overall. The bullpen currently consists of only 2 pitchers who started the season with the Red Wings: Jeff Manship and Anthony Slama. The other 5 started the year with Double-A New Britain.
CUP RUNNETH OVER: The Red Wings tonight resume the hotly-contested battle for the Thruway Series Cup presented by Hillside Family of Agencies, the 3-team race for the best record in western New York among Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.
