Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, eked out a 1-0 win over the Gwinnett Braves on Saturday night from Coolray Field. Left-hander John Lannan earned the win by tossing the Chiefs' second complete-game shutout of the season, throwing just 87 pitches and allowing three hits in the win.

Syracuse (64-71) collected all the offense it would need in the third inning against Braves right-hander Julio Teheran - without the benefit of a hit. Zach Walters walked to lead off the inning, and Jarrett Hoffpauir was hit by a pitch to put two runners aboard. Lannan then laid down a sacrifice bunt to catcher J.C. Boscan, but Boscan bobbled the ball for a fielding error, allowing Lannan to reach base. Eury Perez then bounced into a 6-4-3 double play, but Walters scored to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.

Lannan's left arm would do the rest. The southpaw allowed a first-inning single to Jack Wilson, who was subsequently caught stealing, and retired the minimum through five and one-third innings. In the sixth inning, Boscan doubled with one out, but Lannan retired Teheran and Luis Durango to escape the jam.

Down 1-0, Gwinnett (61-74) would put together a rally in the ninth inning. Boscan began the inning with a high chopper over the mound and reached with an infield single. Jose Constanza then bunted pinch-runner Felix Pie to second base with one out, but Lannan would recover. He retired Durango on a groundout and Josh Wilson on a fly out, ending a virtuoso performance. Lannan joined Zach Duke as the second Syracuse hurler to toss a complete-game shutout this year.

Syracuse and Gwinnett will conclude their four-game series on Sunday night at 5:05. Right-hander Jeff Mandel is slated to take the mound for the Chiefs.
