Rochester Red Wings News Release
SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 2012 w COCA-COLA FIELD
GAME #22 - ROAD GAME #10 - 1:05 P.M.
ROCHESTER RED WINGS (9-12) at BUFFALO BISONS (12-10)
RHP P.J. WALTERS (2-1, 3.38) vs. RHP JEREMY HEFNER (2-1, 1.96)
SOAK UP THE BISON: The Rochester Red Wings today play the 2nd game of their 4-game series at the Buffalo Bisons (Mets), continuing their 8-game roadtrip that also includes a 4-game set at the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field. After a brief 2-game homestand May 5-6 vs. Buffalo, the Wings hit the road for their first of 5 season-long 8-game roadtrips with stops at Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Syracuse (Nationals).
a Rochester is 3 days (4 games) into a stretch of playing a season-high 28 days in a row through May 22 (barring any rainouts). The Wings are winless to start the stretch.
a The Red Wings played 16 of their first 20 games at Frontier Field, including 4 as the "road" team against the Empire State Yankees. Rochester yesterday began a stretch of playing 16 of 18 games as the road team through May 14, but 4 of the 16 will be at Frontier Field against the Empire State Yankees.
a The Red Wings are 4-5 as the road team and 2-3 when they actually play away from Frontier Field.
ROSTER NEWS: The Red Wings today received right-handed pitcher Deolis Guerra from Double-A New Britain. The 23-year-old Venezuelan went 2-0 with one save and a 0.71 ERA in 7 games with the Rock Cats. He worked 7.0 consecutive scoreless innings over his last 4 games and has struck out 15 in 12.2 innings overall.
a Following last night's game, t he Minnesota Twins optioned outfielder Ben Revere to Triple-A Rochester. Revere comes back to the Red Wings after Josh Willingham returned to the Twins from the Paternity Leave List. Revere opened the season on the Twins' Opening Day roster, and was first optioned to Rochester April 15.
ENOUGH ALREADY!: The Red Wings have started 9-12 for the 2nd year in a row and for the 3rd time in the last 4 seasons. The only season with a different record in that time was 2010, when Rochester went 8-13 in its first 21 games.
a With 9 wins, the Red Wings have matched their win total from April of last year with 3 games remaining. The Wings' next win in April would give them their most in the season-opening month since 2008, when they were 13-14.
a The Wings have lost 4 in a row, 6 of their last 8, and 10 of their last 14 since opening the year 5-2. The current 4-game losing streak has tied a season high from April 12-15. The Wings haven't lost 5 in a row since a 2011 season-worst 6-game skid August 20-25.
a The Wings had spent all but 2 days at or above the .500 mark until getting swept in a Thursday doubleheader vs. Syracuse. Rochester is now below .500 for the 3rd day in a row.
PEPSI ANYONE?: The Red Wings last night extended their losing streak in Coke-themed ballparks to 13 games. Rochester has lost 7 straight at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, the longest streak against an opponent on the road, and 6 in a row at Lehigh Valley's (Phillies) Coca-Cola Park. The Wings last won in Buffalo in the 2nd game of an April 19, 2011 doubleheader, a 2-0 triumph in 7 innings.
a The Wings were last victorious in Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania on May 29, 2011, when they posted a 6-2 win. The Wings' next opportunity to end that skid is June 26-29. Perhaps the Times Union Center (formerly known as Pepsi Arena) in Albany can host a few baseball games.
LIVING ON THE EDGE: Eighteen of the Red Wings' first 21 games have been decided by 3 runs or less. The only 3 games that were decided by more than 3 runs are a 10-1 loss April 12 vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox), a 10-5 setback Wednesday vs. Syracuse, and last night's 7-3 loss at Buffalo. A save has been recorded in all but one of the Red Wings' 21 games: Wednesday vs. Syracuse.
LET'S RE-LIVE THE OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 20 games. In the 5 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 4-1. They are 5-11 in their other 15 games.
a The Red Wings have scored an International League-low 66 runs, 10 fewer than the next closest team, Syracuse, which has 76. The league leader is Toledo (Tigers), which has plated 122 runs, 56 more than Rochester.
a On a more positive note, the Wings have grounded into a league-low 8 double plays and are tied for the league lead with 7 triples with Columbus (Indians) and Gwinnett (Braves).
HOMER UNHAPPY: Red Wings pitchers have given up 17 home runs, including 6 in the last 4 games and 2 last night at Buffalo. Nine of the 17 home runs allowed have been with runners on base, including 3 two-run homers, 4 three-run homers, and 2 grand slams. Both grand slams came in the same game Wednesday night vs. Syracuse.
a Offensively, the Wings have slugged 9 home runs, which ranks 12th out of 14 teams in the league. Pawtucket leads the circuit with 29 and Buffalo is 2nd with 28.
PRESTIGIOUS HARDWARE: The Red Wings are in the midst of a heated battle for the Thruway Series Cup, a 3-team race for the best record in upstate New York among Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse. Here are the standings of the Hillside Family of Agencies Thruway Series (Cup standings include only games against one another):
Rank Team Record Win %
1. Buffalo .625
2. Syracuse .500
3. Rochester .444
