The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, split a doubleheader with the Charlotte Knights on Saturday afternoon. Buoyed by a Tyler Moore three-run home run, Syracuse won the first game 5-3, but the Chiefs dropped an 11-1 decision in the second contest.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Charlotte (12-11) scored a first-inning run against Syracuse starter Mitch Atkins. Greg Golson doubled with one out, and two batters later, Dan Johnson laced a single to right field to score the game's first run.

Johnson was also prominently involved in the Knights' second run. He scored in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Danks, giving Charlotte a 2-0 lead.

But Syracuse (8-14) would answer immediately in the bottom of the inning. Mark Teahen led off the inning with a double on an 0-2 pitch against Knights right-hander Charlie Shirek. After Moore was retired on a foul pop, new Chiefs outfielder Brett Carroll singled in Teahen on another 0-2 pitch. Carroll, who began the season in the major leagues with Washington, cut the Charlotte lead to 2-1.

Syracuse then took control in the fifth. Carlos Rivero doubled to lead off the frame, and Seth Bynum reached base on an infield single to first. After a strikeout of Corey Brown and a Bynum stolen base, Josh Johnson stepped up with runners on second and third. The infielder dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line and beat out the throw to first, with Rivero scoring on the RBI bunt single to tie the game at 2.

After a Teahen pop out, Moore stepped up with two runners on and two outs. He then slammed a 1-1 pitch from Shirek over the right field wall for a three-run home run, his team-leading seventh long ball of the season. The homer scored Bynum and Johnson to give the Chiefs a 5-2 lead they would not relinquish.

Charlotte clawed back with a sixth-inning run when Conor Jackson scored on a double-play groundout, but Atahualpa Severino tossed two scoreless innings to earn his second save of the year.

In the second game, starting pitcher Tanner Roark tossed three scoreless innings for the Chiefs before Dan Johnson ignited Charlotte's offense in the fourth. With Golson on base after being hit by a pitch and two outs, Johnson launched a two-run home run to right field, breaking the scoreless tie.

The Knights then piled on in the fifth inning. Three straight singles loaded the bases with one out for Tyler Kuhn, whose sacrifice fly to left field scored the game's third run. After Golson was hit by another pitch to load the bases, Jackson hit a ground ball to third that was bobbled by Jarrett Hoffpauir. The error kept the bases loaded and scored Jose Castro, giving Charlotte a 4-0 lead. Johnson then cleared the bases once more with a first-pitch grand slam to right field, putting the Knights' lead out of reach at 8-0.

Syracuse claimed its only run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Moore doubled in Josh Johnson, but Charlotte would answer with a three-run home run from Danks in the top of the seventh.

The Chiefs and Knights will play the third game of a four-game series Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse right-hander Yunesky Maya and Charlotte left-hander
