Norfolk Tides News Release

The Louisville Bats broke open a close contest with a six-run seventh inning as they knocked off the Norfolk Tides 9-2 Saturday night at Harbor Park.

With the score knotted at 1-1, the Bats sent 10 men to the plate in the decisive seventh frame despite collecting only two hits in the inning. Bill Rhinehart broke the 1-1 tie with an RBI single to score Mike Costanzo, and the Bats added two more runs on a sacrifice fly by Chris Valaika and a two-out error by shortstop Steve Tolleson. The Bats then broke the game open on a bases-clearing double by Neftali Soto off of Willie Eyre that extended the lead to 7-1.

Louisville starter Sean Gallagher (1-2) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, although he pitched well enough where he didn't need all of it. Gallagher retired the first 12 batters of the game and faced just two batters over the minimum through seven innings before being touched up for two hits and a run in the eighth. The 26-year-old right-hander struck out eight and walked one.

Tides starter Brad Bergesen (0-2) pitched very effectively before running into trouble in the seventh, as three of the six runs charged to him were unearned. Bergesen walked two and struck out one, throwing 53 of his 82 pitches for strikes.

Ryan Adams belted his first home run of the season to lead Norfolk's offense, while Joe Mahoney extended his hitting streak to seven games with a fifth inning double.

Stu Pomeranz pitched the ninth inning for Norfolk and struck out the side in his Triple-A debut.

The Tides and Bats will continue their four-game set on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch set for 1:15. Jason Berken (0-0, 0.60) will take the mound for Norfolk against right-hander Chad Reineke (1-0, 4.57).
