Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Gary SouthShore RailCats starter Andy Roberts left Tuesday night's ballgame with a 3-1 lead, notching the second straight quality start by RailCats' pitching, but the bullpen could not hold the lead as the Wingnuts took game one of the three-game series 4-3.

Following a loss in a start in which he gave up five earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched June 10 against Sussex County, Roberts went six innings Tuesday, allowing only one run with two strikeouts in a no decision.

The 'Cats (13-11) had a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh, when Paul Mittura took the hill. Mittura, who hadn't given up a run in his last five appearances, gave up back-to-back hits to lead off the inning and Chuck Fontana took over.

Fontana hadn't surrendered a run in 12.0 innings this season, but the Wingnuts (15-8) took a lead on a passed ball, steal of home plate on a bluff steal of second and double off the wall in left field.

SouthShore hadn't lost a game this season when its starting pitchers have left the game with a lead.

The RailCats' scored first in the second inning on a Roger Bernal infield single before the 'Nuts tied it in the top of the fifth. The 'Cats snatched the lead back on Jon Jones' league-leading fifth triple, which drove in two runs with two outs in the bottom half.

First baseman Michael Schroeder, who had been hitting .091 over the last five games, went 3-for-3 with a double Tuesday.

The 'Cats and 'Nuts go at it again Wednesday with a 7:10 first pitch at the U.S. Steel Yard.
