Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Fargo, ND- The Sioux Falls Canaries (12-13) opened up a four-game series against the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks (7-17), trying to snap a three-game losing streak. Snap it they did, as the Birds' offense exploded for a season high 11 runs on 15 hits to defeat the RedHawks 11-5 on Monday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Birds' found themselves down 3-0 going into the 4th inning, before Brian Humphries doubled and later scored on a Michael Wing RBI single. Wing scored two batters later on an RJ Perucki RBI single into center field.
The Canaries tied the game up on a Jason Repko RBI single into left, and took their first lead of the night on a ground ball off the bat of DH Tyler Shover. Jerome Pena extended the Sioux Falls lead to 5-3 with a bases loaded walk, bringing in Shover from third base.
Fargo got a run back in the bottom of the 6th inning, and later tied the game up at 5-5 in the 7th inning on a two-out, RBI single from second baseman, Frank Salerno.
Humphries gave the Canaries the lead for good in the top of the 8th inning, pushing the eventual game winning run across on a RBI double deep into the gap in right-centerfield. The Birds' tacked on five more runs in the top the 9th inning, to cap off their largest offensive showing of the season.
Pena had a big night, going 2-for-5 with a homerun (1) and three RBI's. Humphries has now hit safely in seven of his last eight games, finishing the night 2-for-6 with two doubles and an RBI.
Starting pitcher Joe Bircher (2-1, 2.45 ERA) picked up the no-decision after allowing four runs on seven hits over six innings. The lefty did not walk a batter, while matching his season high with five strikeouts.
Relief pitcher Mike Watt (1-0, 3.72 ERA) earned his first victory in a Canaries uniform, after allowing one run on two hits in one inning of work.
The series continues on Tuesday night with LHP Miguel Pena (3-1, 2.30) coming off the disabled list to make his 5th start of the season. LHP Mike Mason (1-1, 5.68 ERA) will make his 2nd start of the season for the RedHawks.
The Canaries return to Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night in a three-game series against the Sioux City Explorers, who currently sit in first place in the American Association's central division.
