Roadrunners Sweep Doubleheader from \'Wings

HARLINGEN, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners swept the doubleheader from the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings with a score of 13-12 in game one and 11-6 in game two Thursday night at Harlingen Field.

In game one, The Roadrunners (42-29) got on the board in the first against Andres Rosales (4-4). Felix Molina started things with a single then moved to third on a single by Nelson Teilon. A wild pitch by Rosales allowed Molina to score giving Edinburg the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Carlos Hereaud led off with a single and then moved to second on an Alexis Hernandez base hit. Wilmer Pino then hit a three run home run, his fourth of the season. After Molina reached on a single, Teilon hit a two-run home run to left field. With the bases loaded, Robert Matlock hit an RBI single scoring Ambiorix Concepcion from third. Hernandez then was walked driving in Wilson Batista and then Osiel Flores hit a two-run double scoring Hereaud and Matlock extending the Roadrunners lead 10-0.

The WhiteWings (38-36) responded in the bottom of the third with six runs on six hits against Mark DiBernardo. Arlon Quiroz highlighted the inning with a three run home run making it 10-6 Edinburg.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Matlock reached on a single and then Hernandez reached on a fielding error. Pino followed with an RBI single scoring Matlock from second. A sacrifice fly by Molina allowed Hernandez to score extending the Roadrunners lead 12-6.

RGV answered back yet again in the bottom of the fourth. Luany Sanchez started the inning with a double. After Leivy Ventura was walked, a fielding error allowed Wellington Dotel to reach loading the bases. Wellinson Baez then hit an RBI single scoring Sanchez from third. Eric Gonzalez then drove in Ventura and Dotel with a two-run double. Roberto Rodriguez capped off the scoring with an RBI single allowing Baez to score cutting Edinburg's lead 12-10.

The Roadrunners added another run after Concepcion started the top of the fifth inning with a double and then one out later scored on a wild pitch making it 13-10.

Yuerys Tejeda hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth cutting the lead 13-12.

Julio Castro (2-0) pitched the final inning and two-thirds keeping the WhiteWings off the board picking up his second win of the season and giving Edinburg the 13-12 victory in game one.

In game two, The Roadrunners (43-29) once again got the scoring started in the first. Wilmer Pino led off the game with a single off of Johnny Montoya (0-2). Felix Molina followed with a single moving Pino to third. Nelson Teilon then hit an RBI double that allowed Pino to score. A wild pitch then allowed Molina to score and Teilon to move to third. One out later, Wilson Batista hit an RBI ground out scoring Teilon making it 3-0 Edinburg.

The WhiteWings (38-37) answered in the bottom of the first against Carlos Rangel. Javis Diaz singled, stole second and then moved to third on a throwing error. Dominic DiRicco was walked and then Leivy Ventura hit an RBI single scoring Diaz. A fielding error allowed DiRicco to score from second base for the second run of the inning. With runners on the corners, Eric Gonzalez hit an RBI double to right field allowing Ventura to score tying the game at three.

Roberto Rodriguez started the bottom of the second with a triple to deep center field and then came into score on an RBI single by Diaz giving RGV the 4-3 lead.

Edinburg sent 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the third and got an RBI single by Wilson Batista and an RBI fielder's choice by Carlos Hereaud. The inning was highlighted by Robert Matlock's three-run home run, his first since 2008, which made the score 8-4 Roadrunners.

RGV picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth. Eric Gonzalez singled with one out and then pinch runner Arlon Quiroz moved to third on a fielding error. One batter later, a balk by Rangel allowed Quiroz to score cutting the score to 8-5.

In the top of the fourth, Teilon hit a two-run home run against reliever Tate Kelly extending Edinburg's lead 10-5.

Ambiorix Concepcion started the top of the sixth with a ground rule double and then came into score on an RBI single by Hereaud making it 11-5 Roadrunners.

Ventura got a run back for the WhiteWings in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run off of reliever Evan Cunningham (1-1) making it 11-6 Edinburg.

Eric Montoya pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh giving Edinburg the 11-6 victory.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the fourth game of this five-game series Friday night at Harlingen Field. Jose Pablo Oyervidez (2-0) is expected to face David Cross (5-5) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
