Roadrunners Hold Off \'Wings For Victory

HARLINGEN, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners held off a late comeback from the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings to pick up a 6-3 victory Friday night at Harlingen Field.

The Roadrunners (44-29) got on the board against David Cross in the top of the second. Ambiorix Concepcion led off with a single and then stole second base. Wilson Batista then hit an RBI single to right field scoring Concepcion giving Edinburg the 1-0 lead.

The WhiteWings (38-38) responded in the bottom of the second against Jose Pablo Oyervidez. Leivy Ventura started the inning with a walk. Wellington Dotel followed with a single that put runners at first and second. After moving to third on a double play, Ventura came into score on a double steal tying the game at one.

Oyervidez would allow just one run in seven innings of work while getting the no decision.

Nelson Teilon started the top of the third with a single and then came into score on an RBI double by Batista. After a stolen base of third, Batista came into score on an RBI single by Carlos Hereaud extending the Roadrunners lead 3-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, Luany Sanchez tied the game at three with a two-run home run off of Ricardo Serrano (3-1).

With the game tied at three, Osiel Flores reached on a single in the top of the ninth. Adam Matos then followed with a single to center and a fielding error allowed Flores to go to third. Jose Nieto (0-3) then intentionally walked Albert Gonzalez to load the bases. Wilmer Pino then hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Flores to score and a throwing error allowed Matos to score from second. Robert Matlock followed with an RBI single scoring Gonzalez from second giving the Roadrunners the 6-3 lead.

Julio Castro pitched a scoreless ninth picking up his 20th save of the season to give Edinburg the 6-3 win.

The Roadrunners and WhiteWings will play the final game of this five-game series Saturday night at Harlingen Field. Tim Haines (3-8) is expected to face Misael DeJesus (5-5) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
