Fort Worth Cats News Release
Julio Ruiz combined with two Edinburg relievers to blank the Cats 3-0 Monday night at LaGrave Field.
Ruiz (4-3) allowed just four hits while striking out six over seven innings. Joe Goodman and Steve Wilkerson threw an inning of scoreless ball each to preserve the whitewash.
The loss evens up the Cats' second-half record at 4-4.
Edinburg took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Lehr led off the frame with a triple. The next batter, Vince Moore, singled him home. After an error and a sacrifice bunt, a groundout off the bat of Eddie Fitzpatrick brought home the second run of the inning.
The Cats had their opportunities to get to Ruiz but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position in the game. In the second inning, they had runners at second and third with one out and failed to get the run home.
A bases-loaded chance in the eighth inning went by the boards as Fort Worth was kept out of the run column.
The Roadrunners padded their lead in their half of the eighth when Anthony Angel delivered an RBI single scoring Ryan Webb with the third run of the game.
Wilkerson retired three out of the four men he faced in the ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season.
Cats' starter Brandon Wood (7-2) took his first loss since moving into the starting rotation, despite a strong outing. Wood lasted eight innings and allowed one earned run on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
With the Edinburg victory on Monday, the two teams split the four-game series at two wins apiece.
The Cats and Coastal Bend Aviators open a three-game series on Tuesday night at LaGrave Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Ryan Weems (1-0) starts for Fort Worth and the CBL's all-time wins and strikeouts leader Mike Smith will be on the hill for Coastal Bend
