North Shore's Kelly repeats as pitcher of the week, New Haven County's Hurst nabs batter of the week

July 5, 2004 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release

Durham, N.C. - For the second straight week, North Shore's John Kelly was selected by Sports Ticker as the Northeast League's Pitcher of the Week, while New Haven County's Jimmy Hurst nabbed Batter of the Week honors. This marks the second overall player honor for the Cutters, as Tony Harden was named Pitcher of the Week on June 21.

Kelly, who has won four starts in a row, went 2-0 last week with a 1.23 earned run average for New Haven County. He tossed his third consecutive shutout on June 29 against New Jersey to run his scoreless innings streak to 27. The streak was snapped in the sixth inning of his July 4th outing against Brockton when he gave up two runs, but still recorded his fifth victory of the season. In 14 2/3 innings, Kelly allowed 11 hits, two runs and struck out 22, while posting an ERA of 1.23.

Hurst, who has been playing professionally since 1991, went 10-for-23 for a .435 average, including two doubles and three home runs. In addition, the designated hitter scored five runs and drove in five, while posting slugging and on-base percentage numbers of .913 and .462, respectively. At 19-17, New Haven County has a two-game lead over New Jersey in the South.
