Lancaster Stormers News Release
Two former Barnstormers returned to haunt their old ballclub on Saturday evening.
Danny Gonzalez doubled home the tying run, and Vic Gutierrez singled home the deciding tally in the top of the ninth as the Road Warriors snatched a 3-2 win in front of 7,039 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
The Barnstormers held a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth, thanks to a relay throw from Matt Watson to Gilberto Mejia to Matt Tupman that cut down Michael Mooney trying to score on an Alberto Cruz double for the final out in the eighth inning.
Jonah Bayliss (2-3) picked up two outs quickly and had the Road Warriors down to their final strike before Marcos Cabral banged a double into right center. Gonzalez ripped his two-bagger into the right field corner, and Gutierrez also went down the right stripe for the game winner. Bayliss walked two to load the bases before finally escaping on a pop up by Daniel Jordan.
Eddy Ramos got the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his third save. He replaced starter Luke Massetti (9-12) who allowed six hits and intentional walk in the first eight innings. Massetti struck out none.
Lancaster took a 1-0 lead in the third. Brandon Jones singled up the middle to lead off, becoming Lancaster's first baserunner against Massetti (9-12). Yaibel Tamayo launched a fly ball to deep left that was misjudged by Gabe Suarez for a double, putting runners at second and third. Tupman knocked in a run with a liner to deep right. Mejia's bid for a second sacrifice fly in the inning was thwarted when Mooney gunned down Tamayo at the plate for a double play.
Steve Hammond worked out of a bases loaded jam in the fifth before turning the ball over to the Barnstormers bullpen. The Road Warriors produced a tying run off Justin Segal, again starting with two outs. Mooney drilled a single to center. Jordan slapped a grounder that deflected off Tommy Everidge's glove for an error, moving Mooney to second. Cruz snuck a single down the right field line to even the game at 1-1.
The Barnstormers went ahead, 2-1, on Stephen Douglas' homer to right center with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Lancaster and the Road Warriors will conclude the 2011 regular season on Sunday afternoon, starting at 1:30. John Halama (6-6) will go for the Barnstormers against Chris Little (0-2). The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
NOTES: The Barnstormers lost their second game this season when leading going into the ninth inning...Both have come on this final homestand...Lancaster was held to three or fewer runs for the 12th time in the last 20 games...Douglas has hit safely in all three games he has played...Hammond has not factored in a decision yet despite working 11 innings, giving up four hits and no earned runs.
