April 10, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC: The Road Warriors won their first playoff game since April 26, 2011 with a 4-2 victory over the Reading Royals.
Sebastien Piche scored the first Road Warriors goal of the 2013 Kelly Cup Playoffs with a slap shot from the point. Brandon Wong won the face-off directly to Piche who beat Mark Owuya five-hole. Piche matched his regular season goal total with the goal. The Road Warriors found themselves shorthanded once in the period and efficiently killed off the penalty.
Greeenville started the second period with consecutive two penalty kills; both of which were successfully killed off. Connor Knapp remained strong in net for Greenville throughout the frame. Matt Lowry and Bobby Shea attempted to fight but were separated by the linesmen and issued two minute minors. The second those penalties concluded, the two then fought a solid battle. In the closing minute of the second period, Jason Wilson broke up a play in his own zone and took the puck end-to-end for a goal. The Road Warriors forward beat Owuya on the short-side and also tied his regular season total with the goal.
Just over five minutes into the third period, Danny Hobbs followed up a Lee Bladwin shot to bring the score to a 3-0 Road Warriors' lead. It took Reading until halfway through the period to find the back of the net. Brett Flemming wound up a slap shot on a drop pass from Stanislav Galiev to make the game 3-1 in favor of Greenville. Flemming scored again in the same fashion just 2:57 later. In the final two minutes, Owuya was pulled for the extra attacker which Jordie Johnston took advantage of and scored to end the game with a 4-2 Greenville victory. Knapp saved 37 shots to secure his first professional playoff victory. Owuya was the losing goaltender with 16 saves.
The Road Warriors return to the Century BMW Rink tomorrow night for game four at 7 p.m. The Road Warriors six hour sale begins tomorrow morning at 6 a.m. until noon!
