Road Begins to Take Its Toll on C's in 4-1 Loss to Tri-City
August 3, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Gesa Stadium - Pasco, WA) - For the eighth consecutive night the Vancouver Canadians suited up on the road with the latest dressing room attached to Gesa Stadium, home of the Tri-City Dust Devils. On Friday night, the C's looked spent as the Dust Devils pitching steamrolled through the Vancouver offense en route to a 4-1 victory. The win for Tri-City was its first against Vancouver in seven tries.
Canadians RHP Alek Manoah got the start opposite Tri-City right-hander Nick Thwaits and both traded scoreless frames with Manaoh striking out three over his two innings of work allowing just one hit while Thwaits went three innings and stranded all five Vancouver base runners that he allowed on four hits and a walk.
Tri-City opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd just minutes after the Canadians went to its bullpen bringing in RHP William Gaston. The native of La Habana, Cuba allowed a one-out, solo home run to SS Jordy Barley, his 8th of the season, giving the Dust Devils a 1-0 lead.
Vancouver would score its only run of the night with a little help from Mother Nature as the dusk sky above Gesa Stadium gave both CF Reinaldo Ilarraza and RF Tre Carter fits as both defenders misplayed routine fly balls allowing both SS Tanner Morris and RF Will Robertson to find doubles with Roberton's bringing Morris home to even the game at 1-1 in the top of the 5th inning.
Gaston settled into his appearance after the solo home run in the 3rd inning but couldn't escape the 6th as the right-hander allowed five of the first six hitters he faced in the frame to reach base on three hits and a pair of walks. Dust Devils 3B Kevin Melean led off with a single and later scored on a throwing error from Canadians C Brett Wright proving to be the game winning run.
Vancouver had 13 hitters retired in order from the top of the 5th inning onward as the combination of LHP Ramon Perez and RHP Deivy Mendez overmatching the Canadians offense allowing a walk to 2B Ronny Brito and a single from LF Dominic Abbadessa in the 9th before Mendez got SS Tanner Morris to pop out lightly to SS Jordy Barley to hand the Vancouver its second straight loss.
Canadians LHP Nicolas Medina came in and gave his team a chance going 2 1/3 innings of two-hit shutout baseball and LHP Luke Gillingham pitched a scoreless bottom of the 8th inning to drop his ERA on the season to 3.50.
Vancouver just couldn't connect on anything offensely and combined with a few defensive lapses suddenly find themselves 4-7 (.364) on the second half, a one game improvement on where the team was through 11 games in the first half.
The Canadians continue to get help from the out-of-town scoreboard as Everett snapped a five-game losing streak with a shutout victory over Spokane meaning despite Vancouver's woes they will wake up on Saturday just one game out of first in the North Division with 26 games remaining on the season.
Vancouver plays game two of this series on Saturday, August 3rd at 7:15pm and will send RHP Adam Kloffenstein to the mound in his final outing before the 2019 All-Star Game that will feature Kloffenstein and teammates 1B Yorman Rodriguez and SS Trevor Schwecke. The ASG is set for Tuesday, August 6th, 2019 in Boise, Idaho.
