Peoria Rivermen News Release
Des Moines , IA. (March 1, 2007) - The Peoria Rivermen began the month of March on a positive note and continue to be a force while on the man-advantage as they recorded two power play goals en route to a 3-1 victory over the Iowa Stars Thursday night in front of 3,168 at Wells Fargo Arena. The win snapped Iowa's seven game point streak in which it went 6-0-1-0.
The key to the Peoria win was goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu, who has been filling in nicely for the injured Marek Schwarz. In the past four games Beckford-Tseu has started, he has posted a 3-0-0-1 record with a 0.920 save-percentage and a 2.21 goals against average.
The Stars (31-25-3-1, 66 pts) tallied the first goal of the contest with four skaters on the ice for each team at 8:08 of the opening period. Right wing Junior Lessard carried the puck into the Peoria zone and once he reached the right face-off dot, Lessard whipped a shot into the chest of Beckford-Tseu. The rebound landed in the crease, but before Beckford-Tseu could freeze the puck, forward Chris Conner, who was streaking through the slot, swatted it into the net for his 15th marker of the year.
Peoria (29-20-2-4, 64 pts) notched a power play goal at 6:32 of the middle session to tie the game. After Beckford-Tseu stopped center Dan Hacker on a shorthanded breakaway opportunity, defenseman Jamie Rivers picked up the rebound and hurried down the right-wing boards. Rivers made an abrupt stop at the right point, waiting for help to come then fired a pass to right wing Mike Glumac, who snuck behind the defense into the left face-off circle, where he wristed a shot over the right shoulder of Iowa goaltender Dan Ellis. The goal was Glumac's 15th of the season.
With 2:16 left in the second stanza, the Rivermen registered their second power play goal of the game, this time on a 5-on-3 opportunity. Rivers circled behind the Stars net from left to right then dropped the puck off for center Yan Stastny, who sent it cross-ice for left wing Jon DiSalvatore in the left circle. DiSalvatore rocketed a one-timer past Ellis, who was late in covering the left side of the net, for his 15th tally of the year.
Peoria made the game 3-1 on center Ryan Ramsay's 12 th marker of the 2006-07 campaign at 17:53 of the last frame to seal the deal. Left wing Michal Birner held the puck at the left point after a failed clearing attempt by Iowa and fed it to center Gavin Morgan in the high slot. Morgan unselfishly slid the puck to Ramsay, who was planted at the goalmouth, where he slid a backhander around the outstretched left leg of Ellis. It was the eighth point (6g, 2a) in the last eight games for Ramsay, which includes the first Rivermen hat trick of the year last Friday.
The Rivermen improved to 13-9-1-2 on the road and will return home for a weekend set against the Houston Aeros on both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Saturday's game time is 7:00 p.m.
