Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel has announced that leading goal scorer Garrett Vermeersch has been called up by the Greenville Road Warriors (ECHL) and will report immediately. There is no timetable for his return.
Vermeersch, 23, appeared in all 16 games for the Rivermen this season and led the team with nine goals, including a hat trick in Peoria's home opener on Oct. 26. The 6'0, 180-pound rookie center also notched seven assists, 16 points and a plus-6 rating, which led all Rivermen forwards.
A native of Macomb, Michigan, Vermeersch spent the last four years at Northeastern University in Boston, where he recorded 23 goals and 50 assists over 130 colligate games. During his junior season in 2011-12, he tied for the team lead in goals (10) and was third overall in team scoring (24 points).
Vermeersch joins winger Tyler Fernandez as the two Rivermen players who have been called up this season. Fernandez was promoted to ECHL Wheeling on Nov. 26 and has three goals in six games with the Nailers.
Following a weekend off, the Rivermen will return to action on Friday, Dec. 20 with a 7:15 p.m. puck drop against the Bloomington Thunder at Carver Arena. Peoria will wear custom "Central Illinois STRONG" jerseys to support tornado relief efforts in central Illinois, which will be auctioned off live after the game. All proceeds will benefit the local American Red Cross. The game can be heard locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or online at www.cd1079.net .
