SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—The Memphis RiverKings are starting their second annual Commercial Appeal Newspaper In Education program and will be making appearances at more local schools.

The 15-week program distributes Saturday and Sunday copies of The Commercial Appeal to participating classrooms. Teachers also receive a "Reading, Writing & RiverKings" workbook with weekly activities to be used, along with the newspaper, as a classroom tool.

"We believe students' understanding of geography, current events, and innovations of all kinds from arts to zoology will be increased through contact, research and analysis of newspaper articles," RiverKings President Robin Grindstaff Costa said.

The RiverKings also offer the opportunity to invite a player to the participating classrooms. When the player or players visit, they will discuss the sport of hockey and the area of the world the player calls home and participate in a fun, interactive classroom game using the newspaper.

"The RiverKings' goal is to assist the community in any area we can," Costa said. "We hope to inspire students to achieve their best by allowing them to meet and see the accomplishments of a professional athlete."

Costa said the Newspaper In Education program is an opportunity to encourage literacy and generate excitement about education.

"Children who would not normally take a second glance at a newspaper will be more likely to pick up a newspaper even after the program is over," Costa said. "The activities promote creativity in many areas of education, including the visual arts, in addition to core subjects. Plus the players' participation with the children in the activities, and their interest in the children's lives, makes education exciting."
