SOUTHAVEN, Miss. -- Newcomer Phil Bronner led the way for the Mississippi RiverKings (18-9-2) with a pair of goals as they knocked off the Louisiana IceGators (17-11-3) 3-2 in front of 3,335 for Belhaven University's "Pack the House" Night benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The RiverKings wasted little time finding the back of the net. Devin Mantha tallied his third goal in two games on a lead pass from Matt Harrington 9:18 into the action to give the home-team a 1-0 lead they would take into the first intermission.
In the second, the RiverKings picked up right where they left off in the first. Phil Bronner took Leo Thomas' pass and ripped a shot over the glove of Matt Zenzola to put the RiverKings up by two just 2:08 into the middle period. Louisiana cut the RiverKings' lead to one with Tyler Lyon's backhanded shot that beat Matt Krahn at the halfway point of the second. But Bronner struck again six minutes later with his second goal of the game, a backhander over the leg pad of Zenzola to send the RiverKings to the locker room ahead 3-1.
In the third, Louisiana battled back. Captain Shawn McNeil pushed a rebound past Krahn on the power play 11:05 into the final frame, cutting the RiverKings' lead back to one. But the RiverKings held off the 'Gators' attack to take their first game of the season from them by the score of 3-2.
Matt Krahn (9-3-2) picked up the win after stopping 31 of 33 shots against. Matt Zenzola (10-5-1) stopped 25 of 28 shots against in the loss.
As part of the "Pack the House" promotion, the RiverKings donated a portion of ticket sales to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, totaling over $5,000 for the Memphis, Tenn. based research hospital. The RiverKings also auctioned off special Elvis jerseys that raised over $7,500 for various non-profit charities in the Mid-South.
The RiverKings return home tomorrow night as they take on the Knoxville Ice Bears. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. and tickets are still available. To purchase tickets, visit the Landers Center Box Office or purchase online at ticketmaster.com.
