Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Ice Flyers hosted the Mississippi Surge for the first game of their Fifth Anniversary weekend and destroyed the Surge 6-1. With an attendance of 6,162, it was the 4th highest attendance for an Ice Flyers regular season or playoff game.
The game got off to a wild start as Mississippi's Chapen LeBlond dropped the gloves with Pensacola's Joe Bueltel just eight seconds into the game. The Ice Flyers took the first lead when Keegan Flaherty and Adam Pawlick skated in on a 2-on-1. Pawlick passed the puck to Flaherty who then fired a shot past the Surge's Dan Clarke. Nate Peterson picked up the secondary assist on the goal.
The Ice Flyers took a 1-0 lead into second period then the flood gates opened. With two quick goals from Brett Lutes and Shaun Arvai that came just 14 second apart, the Ice Flyers jumped to a 3-0 lead a little over six minutes into the second. Lutes' goal was assisted by John Dunbar and Bennett Schneider. Arvai roofed the puck over Clarke immediately after getting a pass from Podge Turnbull. Turnbull's assist was the one on the goal. Mississippi picked up a power play goal by Justin MacDonald with just under five minutes remaining to cut Pensacola's lead down to 3-1.
The Ice Flyers weren't satisfied with the two goal lead they had heading into the third and scored a power play goal by Corey Banfield just 35 seconds in. Malcolm Lyles and Arvai assisted on the tally. The score stood at 4-1 until Turnbull beat Clarke 11:27 into the third. Schneider hit Turnbull with a beautiful stretch pass then Turnbull skated in all alone. Pawlick scored with 2:22 remaining in the game to make it 6-1 and put the final nail in the Surge's coffin. Dunbar and Joe Caveney assisted on the goal.
Peter Di Salvo picked up his seventh win of the season by stopping 30 of the Surge's 31 shots. The Ice Flyers swept the Three Stars with Di Salvo being named the third, Arvai the second, and Lutes was the first star.
The Ice Flyers next game is tomorrow night as they close out the Fifth Anniversary weekend with a matchup against the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Pensacola Bay Center's Box Office for $5 beginning at noon or at 9 a.m. in the Ice Flyers' office. ###
