RiverKings news and notes

January 21, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Mississippi RiverKings News Release

Early to bed, early to rise ... could make the RiverKings healthy, wealthy, and wise tomorrow morning. They will host the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at 10 a.m. for their Face-Off Field Trip. Please note that those who cannot attend the game can listen to it on Y 96.1 FM beginning at 9:50 a.m. The Mudbugs lost in a shootout 3-2 to the SteelHounds in Youngstown yesterday and missed out on setting the Central Hockey League record for most consecutive wins. They had equaled the Colorado Eagles' 15-game winning streak from last year on Saturday. The RiverKings trail the Mudbugs by nine points for the Northeast Division lead.

Following tomorrow's game, the RiverKings will head on over to Beef O'Brady's on Goodman Road in Southaven for a special installment of RiverKings Roundup. The show will air at 7 p.m. on Sports 56 WHBQ.

Then on Thursday, the RiverKings will entertain the Oklahoma City Blazers in a crucial Northern Conference matchup. The game will start at 7:05 p.m. with the pre-game show beginning at 6:55 p.m. on Sports 56. The Blazers sit four points behind the SteelHounds for the final playoff spot, and five points behind the RiverKings for the #4 seed.

Finally on Friday, the RiverKings will visit the Tulsa Oilers at 7:35 p.m. The broadcast will start on Sports 56 at 7:25 p.m. The Oilers and the Wichita Thunder have the lowest point totals in the CHL at 23.

WEEK REVIEW (2-1)

Friday: Mississippi 4, Tulsa 2

Louis Dumont and Ryan Campbell each had a goal and two assists to lead the RiverKings over the Oilers at the DeSoto Civic Center.

Derek Landmesser scored his fifth goal of the season 3:37 into the game to make it 1-0. Steve Makway scored his sixth of the season on a power play with 3:51 remaining in the first to make it 2-0. Then Campbell deflected a Chad Woollard shot on a power play with 59 seconds left in the period for his 13th to give the RiverKings a 3-0 lead after 20.

Dumont scored his ninth of the year at 5:56 of the second period to give the RiverKings a 4-0 lead. However, the Oilers did get on the scoreboard at 11:58. Jeff Christian scored on a shorthanded breakaway and potted his 10th of the year.

The Oilers made it a 4-2 game on a power play when Paul Kelly scored his 13th of the year with 13:28 left in the game. However, they would get no closer.

Jeff Van Nynatten looked solid in his RiverKings debut, making 30 saves. Despite the four goals, Clint Chalmers played well in net for the Oilers and made 39 saves.

Saturday: Mississippi 4, Texas 1

Chad Woollard scored twice against his former team as the RiverKings defeated the Brahmas at the NYTEX Sports Centre.

Woollard got things started for the RiverKings with his 18th goal of the season at 7:29 of the first period. However, the Brahmas tied the game at 12:00 on a power play. Anders Strome lit the lamp for the 17th time this year to make it a 1-1 hockey game.

The RiverKings went ahead at 7:00 of the second period. Ryan Campbell scored his 14th of the season on a breakaway to make it 2-1. Then at 8:27, Woollard took advantage of a giveaway in the Brahmas' zone and rifled home his 19th of the year. Ryan Held scored his 12th of the year at 7:27 of the third period.

Ian Keserich made 34 saves in his RiverKings debut. Brett Jaegar made 19 saves for the Brahmas.

Sunday: Texas 3, Mississippi 1

David Cacciola made 37 saves to carry the Brahmas over the RiverKings in Southaven.

Anders Strome scored his 18th goal of the season and Grant Jacobsen netted his sixth to give the Brahmas a 2-0 first period lead. Ryan Held scored his 13th of the season early in the third period to make it 2-1, but the RiverKings could not tie the game. Jordan Cameron scored into an empty net with 17 seconds remaining for his 15th of the year.

Jeff Van Nynatten made 23 saves for the RiverKings.

STRANGE BUT TRUE FACTS

Rick Kozak had an assist in his 100th pro game on Sunday. He has the third-most penalty minutes in the league at 156, his six game-winning goals rank him second, and his nine power play goals have him tied for second ..... Before Sunday, Ryan Campbell had scored a goal in three straight games. His 26 assists and 40 points place him in the league's top 20 on both counts, and his three shorthanded goals put him the CHL's top 10 ..... Before Sunday, Chad Woollard had three straight games with two points. His 19 goals leave him just outside the league's top 10, and his 154 shots on goal tie for fifth ..... Steve Makway's 113 penalty minutes rank him 22nd in the CHL. He and Derek Landmesser each have 14 power play assists to put them both in the league's top 10 ..... Before their victories over the weekend, neither Jeff Van Nynatten nor Ian Keserich had won a game since Nov. 24 .... The RiverKings have a 9-0 record when leading after one and a 16-0 record when leading after two ..... Jason Weitzel recorded an assist in consecutive games for the first time as a pro on Friday ..... The RiverKings have the second-best penalty kill in the CHL at 86.61% ..... The RiverKings have a 14-0 record when scoring four times or more ..... Sheldon Wenzel's 125 penalty minutes rank him 15th in the CHL ..... Ryan Held scored in his 100th RiverKings game on Sunday ..... Louis Dumont now has 982 points as a pro.

And the strangest one of all: Because of victories from both Jeff Van Nynatten and Ian Keserich, the RiverKings have had six different goalies win at least one game for them this season. Believe it or not, this has happened before! During the 2000-2001 season, Mark Richards won 27 games, Aaron Vickar won 10, Martin Fillion and Vlad Kulikov each had a pair, and Mike Brusseau and Alan Hitchen each had one.
