Mississippi RiverKings News Release

After playing the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs four times in the first three weeks of the season, the Mississippi RiverKings will spend this week concentrating on the Sooner State. The RiverKings will head west for a meeting with the Tulsa Oilers tomorrow, and then come home for a weekend series with the Oklahoma City Blazers.

The 'Kings ran the Oilers out of the DeSoto Civic Center last week in the only meeting so far this season between the two teams. Tuesday's clash will be the second of nine between them on the calendar, as well as the first of five at the Tulsa Convention Center.

The RiverKings have yet to play the Blazers this season. They will hook up seven times this year, with four of those meetings at the DCC. The teams met in the first round of the President's Cup Playoffs last season, with the Blazers winning Game 7 on April 10 at the DCC by a score of 3-2.

WEEK IN REVIEW (2-1)

Tuesday: Mississippi 8, Tulsa 3

Seven different RiverKings registered two points each as the RiverKings blasted the Oilers at the DCC.

Steve Slonina led the attack with two goals. Louis Dumont, Ryan Held, Rick Kozak, and Ryan Kindret each had a goal and an assist. Chad Woollard and Derek Landmesser each had two assists.

David Beauregard gave the OIlers a 1-0 lead early in the game, but Slonina and Dumont scored before the end of the first period to make it 2-1 'Kings.

Slonina and Kozak scored early in the second period to give the RiverKings a 4-1 lead, but the Oilers got goals from Lance Herauf and Paul Kelly to make it a 4-3 game halfway through it. However, Held's goal with 3:10 remaining in the second prevented the Oilers from getting any closer.

Goals from Aaron Davis and Ryan Campbell sandwiched Kindret's marker in the final period.

Sebastien Centomo made 15 saves for the RiverKings and won his second straight start in his second tour of duty with the team.

Kevin St. Pierre stopped 25 out of 30 shots through two periods for the Oilers, with Clint Chalmers making 14 saves in the third.

Friday: Mississippi 3, Bossier-Shreveport 0

Larry Sterling made 29 saves to backstop the RiverKings over the Mudbugs at CenturyTel Center.

Sterling made 13 saves in the first period as the Mudbugs had the RiverKings on the ropes in the early going. The 'Kings, though, got all the offense they needed at 1:10 of the second period. Aaron Davis cashed in on a rebound during a power play for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 Mississippi lead.

Chad Woollard also scored on the power play early in the second. HIs second goal of the season made it 2-0. Davis hit an empty-netter with four seconds remaining in the game to cap his two-goal night.

Saturday: Bossier-Shreveport 3, Mississippi 1

Daniel Pegoraro scored shorthanded with 3:20 remaining in the game to give the Mudbugs their first win of the season.

Pegoraro backhanded the puck through Sebastien Centomo's 5-hole on a breakaway to give the Mudbugs their first victory over the RiverKings in four tries.

The 'Kings had tied the game with 12:29 remaining on Chad Woollard's power play goal. Woollard shot the puck from the right circle over John DeCaro's left shoulder to make it a 1-1 game.

The 'Bugs got on the board with 4:46 left in the second period when Justin Aikins buried a rebound past Centomo following a good initial save.

Joe Ori added an empty net goal in the final minute.

Centomo made 28 saves for the 'Kings. DeCaro made 34 stops for the 'Bugs.

STRANGE BUT TRUE FACTS

The RiverKings have surrendered three shorthanded goals already this season. Two of them came with the score tied in the third period and resulted in game-winning goals for the other team ... The multi-goal performances from Slonina and Davis marked the first ones of the season for the RiverKings ... Woollard leads the team with eight points. He has registered at least one in each of the last five games, and has the 'Kings only three-point game so far after having a hand in all the scoring on Friday ... The Mudbugs snapped Landmesser's season-opening five-game point-per-game streak on Saturday. They also took care of Makway's four-game point-scoring string that same night, as well as Campbell's season-opening four-game point-streak on Friday ... The RiverKings are 3-0 on Friday, but 0-2 on Saturday ... Cody Blanshan leads the team with a +3 rating ... Sheldon Wenzel leads the team with 33 penalty minutes ... The 'Kings lead the CHL in penalty killing with a 93.5% efficiency and have killed off the opposition's last 23 power plays.
