November 5, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
Hidalgo, Texas --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League and Cookin' for the Cure together raised nearly $30,000 at the 2nd Cookin' for the Cure cookoff and Pink Sticks Auction held on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Dodge Arena.
"As a board member of the American Cancer Society, I'm proud that the team was able to help raise funds and awareness for the cause, and we truly appreciate the involvement of all the sponsors and participants" said Killer Bees General Manager and 2007 Chairman of Cookin' for the Cure, Grant Buckborough. "We're looking forward to supporting this again next season."
Over 30 cooking teams participated in the two day event, while Killer Bees players contributed to the cause by wrapping their hockey sticks with pink hockey tape and then signing them with messages of hope and perseverance. The Pink Sticks Auction alone raised over $4000.
"My husband Gene and I are so proud to be part of an event that brings our community together and supports such a worthwhile cause," explained Melissa Mikulik, Co-Founder of Cookin' for the Cure and President of the American Cancer Society's local Board of Directors. "All the money raised through this year's Cookin' for the Cure goes directly to patient services in the Rio Grande Valley provided by the American Cancer Society. We're looking forward to next October when we get to do this again."
