Laredo Bucks on brink of CHL history

November 5, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

The Laredo Bucks capped off another outstanding week on Sunday with a 4-0 shutout victory over the Austin Ice Bats. The win was their ninth straight with the Bucks outscoring the opposition 50-12 over that stretch (5.6-1.3). Sunday's shutout by Kevin Beech was the Bucks fourth of the season and the second by the team's "back-up" goaltender. The reigning Sher-Wood CHL Goaltender of the Month Dustin Traylen is 5-0 with two shutouts. Jeff Bes continues to lead the CHL in scoring with 19 points (8-11=19) and teammate Chris Korchinski is tied for second with 15 points (5-10=15).

The nine straight wins to start a season is just one win shy of tying the CHL record of 10 straight wins. The feat was accomplished in the CHL by the 2002-03 Austin Ice Bats and also in the WPHL with the 1996-97 New Mexico Scorpions. Both of those squads went on to win their league's regular season championships but interestingly enough neither won their league's overall championships. The 2002-03 Ice Bat's team finished the regular season 46-14-4 and eventually lost to the Memphis RiverKings in the CHL Finals. That club lost for the first time in its 11th game of the season and through 17 games boasted a 15-1-1 mark. The CHL record for consecutive wins is 15 accomplished last season by the Colorado Eagles.

The Bucks this week play a pair of home games with the Corpus Christi Rayz coming to town on Friday night and the 7-0-1 Youngstown SteelHounds coming in to Laredo for a Saturday night showdown. The Hounds play at Austin on Friday night and should both the Bucks and SteelHounds get through their Friday night games unblemished it would set a "Super Bowl" type match-up on Saturday at the Laredo Entertainment Center.

Touchdown and a Field Goal for the Scorpions

The New Mexico Scorpions put on an offensive show on Saturday night versus the Rocky Mountain Rage who came into the match-up with a 5-0-1 record leading the way in the Northwest Division. The final score was 10-0 as the Scorpions jumped out to a 5-0 first period lead. Dominic Osman scored three goals and had an assist with six other New Mexico players putting together multiple-point efforts. Goaltender Andrew Martin made 31 saves earning the shutout. For Martin it was just his second appearance of the season. The win was the second in a row for the Scorpions and it moved them to 3-4-1 on the season.

Weekly Award Winners

Dominic Osman of New Mexico and David Cacciola of Texas have been named the Oakley CHL Player/Goaltender of the Week. Osman finished the week with five goals and two assists in three games. Cacciola went 3-0 with a .934 save percentage during the week.

Starting a New Streak

The three winless CHL teams heading into last Saturday night all came away with impressive victories. Wichita's Sebastien Laplante made 36 saves earning a 3-0 shutout over Oklahoma City moving the Thunder to 1-4-0. The Mudbugs defeated the RiverKings 3-1 on Saturday night with John DeCaro making 34 saves and Amarillo defeated the defending Ray Miron Cup Champion Colorado Eagles 5-4 in a shootout. Chris Lipsett had a pair of goals for the Gorillas including the game winner in the shootout.
