Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN --- Larry Sterling stopped 20 of 21 shots and Travis Banga had the game winner as the RiverKings defeated the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs 2-1 in a shootout Saturday evening at the DeSoto Civic Center. The RiverKings next play Tuesday night when they host the Oklahoma City Blazers at 7:05. The first 1,500 fans receive WMC Channel 5 RiverKings CheerStix.
The win gave the RiverKings four points and sole possession of second place behind the first place and undefeated Youngstown Steelhounds in the Northeast Division. Memphis moved to 2-1-1 on the young season while Bossier-Shreveport left the DCC with a 1-2-2 record.
Bossier-Shreveport scored early, just 1:42 into the game, when Karlis Zirnis tipped in a Jason Basile shot from the point. It was Zirnis' team leading fourth goal and it gave the Mudbugs the 1-0 lead. That lead lasted until Travis Banga set up Ryan Campbell on a centering feed down the slot. Campbell beat Mudbug goalie John Decaro for his second of the season at the 6:01 mark of the first to tie the game 1-1.
The score remained tied through the second and third periods followed by the overtime. In the shootout, both teams converted on their first two attempts. Jason Sessa and Derek Landmesser cashed in for Memphis while Basile and Chris Brassard did the same for Bossier-Shreveport.
Both goalies tightened up, with Banga's winner in the fourth round of the shootout being the only goal allowed in the final three rounds.
Sterling picked up his second straight win between the pipes and improved his season record to 2-0-1. He also improved his career record versus Bossier-Shreveport to 7-4-0. The rookie Decaro was the tough luck loser after stopping 34 of 35 shots. He falls to 0-1-2.
The Mudbugs are off until they play at Tulsa Friday night at 7:35.
