Corpus Christi IceRays News Release

Justin Quenneville twice played the role of hero Saturday Night as he led the Corpus Christi Rayz to their first win of the season. Quenneville forced overtime with a third period goal, and then scored the game winner 1:03 into sudden death, as the Rayz beat the Austin Ice Bats 3-2 at American Bank Center. The win was the first of the year for the Rayz and raised the record to 1-2 on the young season. Austin played their second overtime game in three this season and moved their record to 1-1-1. The Rayz will now have two days off until they travel to Laredo for Tuesday night's contest on Halloween. The Rayz will play four games next week, beginning with a three-game road trip.

The Rayz got into shorthanded trouble early on taking three penalties in the first eight minutes of the game. Austin capitalized on the second one when Jean-Francois Picard scored from the right point at 5:41 of the first period to give Austin a 1-0 lead. The Rayz however equaled the scored shorthanded at 7:24. Ryan Carter tallied his second goal in as many games from the start of the year, after winning a faceoff and then getting a pass from Matt Turek in front of the net. Carter waited and beat Miguel Beaudry to tie the score at one. The shorthanded goal was the Rayz first of the year, and Austin's lead-worst fourth allowed. The Rayz outshot the Bats 9-5 in the opening period.

Austin's John McNabb got the only goal of the second period when he ripped a shot from the top of the left circle that stayed low to the ice and beat Vogel at 9:07. Both teams mustered seven shots on goal in the second period and Austin took a 2-1 lead into the third.

In the third period, the Rayz forced overtime when Quenneville scored his first of the night on a power play at 4:13 of the period. The Rayz then had a number of power play chances to take the lead, including 3:12 of two-man advantage time. However, Beaudry and the Ice Bats stood strong and kept the game tied. The Rayz dominated the offensive attack in the final period, and outshot the Bats 16-5.

In overtime, Quenneville again emerged as the hero when he ended the game 1:03 into the extra session. Steve Pelletier started a rush and fed Jason Baird in the Austin zone. Baird fluttered a pass to Quenneville who redirected the puck past Beaudry to give the Rayz the 3-2 overtime victory. Quenneville had four goals in two pre-season games against Austin, including a hat trick at the American Bank Center.

Ron Vogel made 15 saves on 17 shots to earn his first win of the season and improve to 1-1. Beaudry took the tough overtime loss, despite playing well and now stands with a 1-0-1 record. The Rayz outshot the Bats 33-17, and have allowed only 70 shots in three games this season. Corpus Christi went 1-9 on the power play and Austin was 1-6. The game was delayed over an hour because of travel problems that Austin had coming to Corpus Christi.
