LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks announced Friday that they have acquired catcher Joe Dempsey from Lincoln of the independent American Association in exchange for future considerations.

Dempsey, who will be 24 on Aug. 22, hit .229 with no home runs and six RBI in 26 games for the Saltdogs. He batted .309 with no home runs and five RBI in 17 games with Lincoln last season. He has Rookie-2 status in the Frontier League.

Dempsey's addition gives the RiverHawks a backup catcher for Mike Scripture. Catcher Robert Sabates, who fouled a ball off his ankle on August 2, will miss the rest of the season. He had been placed on the DL because of a severly sprained ankle and a bone bruise, but X-rays revealed a hairline fracture of the ankle. Sabates, who joined the RiverHawks in late June, hit .295 with six home runs and 29 RBI in 32 games. Only Jason James has hit more home runs for Rockford.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season. Advertising and ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Most games are broadcast live on WNTA (1330 AM) and the internet. Fans can also visit the RiverHawks online at www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
