August 9, 2008 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks jumped out to an early lead in the opener of Friday's doubleheader, but wasted numerous opportunities in the nightcap as the Midwest Sliders salvaged a split. Rockford scored four times in the first inning of the first game and won, 7-4. In the nightcap, the RiverHawks left 10 men in scoring position and lost, 6-2.
With the split, the RiverHawks fell two games behind Gateway in the race for the final Frontier League playoff spot. The Grizzlies won, 6-4, at Kalamazoo.
In the opener, Rockford started the first inning with five straight hits - singles from Joe Anthonsen, Aaron Davis, Brad Dutton, Robbie Knapp and a double by Tony Gonzalez - and took a 4-0 lead. Carlos Rivera led off the second with a home run to the right-field beer garden, his first professional homer.
The Sliders rallied for four runs in the fourth inning. Brian Vickers doubled with one out and the next four batters walked. Anthony Albano hit a sacrifice fly and Sam Snell singled in a run to cut Rockford's lead to 5-4.
The RiverHawks scored a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning. Anthonsen singled in a run and later evaded a rundown play, which allowed Rivera to score from third base.
Peden Rucker (3-2) pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. James Cramphin earned his seventh save. Ryan MacFarlane (2-3) suffered a complete-game loss.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 16th season.
