Charleston, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs scored six runs in the first three innings of Friday's duel with the Fredericksburg Nationals at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. That was enough to secure a 7-2 victory when heavy rains and strong winds descended upon the ballpark in the bottom of the seventh inning, wiping out the remainder of the contest. The game was played in front of a boisterous standing room crowd of 5,638.

The Nationals (21-10) jumped out of the gate against Owen Wild in the very first inning. The second batter of the game, Jeremy De La Rosa, yanked a triple to the wall in right field. Brandon Pimentel followed immediately with a bouncer through the right side to give the visitors a 1-0 head start.

The RiverDogs (12-17) bounced right back, scoring multiple runs in each of the first two innings. They first grabbed the lead in the bottom of the opening frame when Narciso Polanco and Adrian Santana began the attack with back-to-back singles off Jarlin Susana. Noah Myers cashed in out of the clean-up spot, slapping a two-run single through the left side and the RiverDogs led 2-1.

They continued to attack Susana in the second and third frames. The right-hander repeatedly touched 102 mph on the radar gun but walked three batters in the second inning. One of those free passes came with the bases loaded and another run scored on a balk. Three more walks and a two-run single from Ricardo Gonzalez stretched the margin to 6-1 in the third.

Fredericksburg scored one more run in the sixth inning before Wild departed for the night. De La Rosa ripped another triple into the right field corner with one out and Pimentel followed with a sacrifice fly. Wild tossed 6.0 strong innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. He was rewarded with his first win of the campaign.

Angel Mateo blasted his fourth home run of the campaign in the seventh inning, shortly before the weather arrived, to cap the scoring. The 19-year-old leads the team in home runs and with 15 runs batted in. Myers added two hits and two RBI.

The Nationals received two triples from De La Rosa in three at-bats. Pimentel increased his league-leading RBI total to 38 with two more on Friday.

Ballpark Fun

The RiverDogs third weekend at home began with their largest Friday crowd of the season, thanks in large part to a sizable group from Seacoast Church. The group filled the 200-level sections from the first base side to all the way behind home plate. Throughout the game, they tossed frisbees back-and-forth and batted balloons from section to section.

The series will continue on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. The RiverDogs will wear special jerseys on Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond Night. Those jerseys will be auctioned off online and in the ballpark. LHP Drew Dowd (0-1, 3.60) will take the mound out of the gate for the RiverDogs, with RHP Marc Davis (0-0, 4.30) opposing him for Fredericksburg.
