KANNAPOLIS, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (9-21) defeated the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (14-16) in a thriller on Friday night by a score of 6-2.
Kannapolis grabbed a first-inning lead for the second-straight night as Eddie Park scored Rikuu Nishida with a single, making it 1-0 Cannon Ballers after an inning.
The Shorebirds evened the game in the third as Braylin Tavera scored Kevin Guerrero on a high bouncer back to the pitcher, tying the game at one apiece.
With the game still tied at one in the sixth, Delmarva broke the tie with a run-scoring groundout by Aron Estrada that plated Alfredo Velasquez from third base, giving the Shorebirds their first lead at 2-1.
In the bottom half of the inning, Kannapolis answered as Ronny Hernandez singled to center to score the tying run. However, Braylin Tavera prevented the Cannon Ballers from taking the lead as he threw out Luis Pineda at home on the play to end the inning, keeping it a 2-2 game.
In the eighth, with the game still even and runners at second and third, Aron Estrada struck again with a two-run single with two outs to give Delmarva a 4-2 lead.
Braylin Tavera cashed in two more runs for Delmarva in the ninth with a two-run single of his own, giving the Shorebirds their largest advantage of the night at 6-2.
Grabiel Salazar finished the job for Delmarva as he got the final three outs in the ninth to secure a 6-2 win for Delmarva, giving them their third win in four games.
Nestor German (1-2) earned his first career win in relief with Grabiel Salazar (1) picking up the third save for Delmarva this week. Mark McLaughlin (1-2) was the losing pitcher for the Cannon Ballers.
Braylin Tavera and Aron Estrada led the Shorebirds with 3 RBIs each, with both players picking up two hits. It's the third consecutive game for Estrada with multiple base hits and he is now 8/13 (.615) in the series.
Delmarva will look to earn their first series win of the season on Saturday as they send Jacob Cravey to the mound to face Lucas Gordon for Kannapolis. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
