CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs are teaming up against prostate cancer with Ed Randall's "Bat for the Cure."

Representatives from Randall's organization will be on hand during the RiverDogs game on Friday, June 10 against the Asheville Tourists, to help raise awareness for the threat of the disease, and encourage males 40 and over to have their prostate examined.

The visit to Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park is just part of the 5th Annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Road Trip, which will take Randall and his staff around the country at major and minor league baseball games. The RiverDogs will provide an information table and videoboard messages to help with awareness.

In December 2001, two New York City guys -- lifelong friends Ed Randall and Tony Lacitignola -- formed a charity foundation called Ed Randall's "Bat for the Cure."

Randall is the host of "Talking Baseball" on New York's WFAN on Sunday mornings. He also hosts "Under the Lights," a new wrap show on MLB-Radio. It's akin to "Baseball Tonight," only better and longer. He has had a cable TV show for the last 15 years and is the author of Tales from the Yankee Dugout.

Ed and Tony have been close friends since their freshman year at Fordham University, but in 2001 Ed was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Through quick diagnosis, prompt action and the grace of God, he is in remission.

They decided that they wanted to do something to spur on the fight against the second leading killer of men in America. The bottom line was Ed had the disease; Tony had the marketing and administrative background.

The primary goals of Ed Randall's "Bat for the Cure" are to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research. For prostate cancer these days, there is early detection and therapies, but there is no prevention and no cure. There is much confusion, shame and ignorance, yet there is no great awareness.
