The Hickory Crawdads overcame a five run deficit in the last two innings to defeat the Lexington Legends 8-7 Thursday night in front of 6,480 fans at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

Hickory broke on top 1-0 in the second inning when former University of Louisville star Josh Richmond hit his sixth home run of the year. Lexington tied the game in the third. With one out, Jiovanni Mier and Adam Bailey recorded back-to-back singles. After Chris Wallace was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Mike Kvasnicka singled home Mier.

The Legends took the lead in the fourth on Roberto Pena's solo home run, and they added two more runs in the fifth. After Mier doubled to lead off the inning, Bailey followed with a ground rule double bounced over the wall in left-center, plating Mier. Wallace's single advanced Bailey to third, from where he scored on Kvasnicka's fly to center, giving Lexington a 4-1 lead. Hickory added a run in the sixth when Christian Villanueva doubled and scored on Andrew Clark's single, but the Legends answered with a run on Mier's double and Bailey's RBI single, leaving the score at 5-2.

Four walks helped Lexington add two more in the seventh for a 7-2 lead. With one out, Emilio King walked and Tyler Burnett singled. Three consecutive walks followed, producing two runs.

Hickory began its comeback in the eighth. With one out, consecutive singles by Odubel Herrera, Tomas Telis, and Villanueva produced a run and left runners at first and second. Clark flied out to center field, and Telis moved to third after the catch. When Villanueva broke for second, Kvasnicka's throw from third base went into right field for an error, allowing Telis to score and cutting the Lexington lead to 7-4.

The Crawdads scored four in the ninth, all coming home after two outs. With one out, Jake Skole reached on an error by DeShields at second, and Jhonny Gomez walked. After Teodoro Martinez struck out, Jurickson Profar singled to score Skole, and Gomez moved to third. Herrera followed with a single, scoring Gomez and advancing Profar to third, from where he scored on a passed ball charged to Pena. Telis' single scored Herrera with the go-ahead run.

The Legends put runners at first and third with two outs in the ninth, but Herrera, the second baseman, made a leaping catch of Mier's line drive to end the game.

Jorge Marban (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching one and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Jorge DeLeon (1-3) took the loss after allowing four unearned runs in his one inning of work.

Lexington and Hickory will play game two of their three-game series Friday night; first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
