Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats scored five runs off three different Augusta GreenJackets relievers in the seventh inning to come from behind and pull out a 5-3 win over the GreenJackets in the opener of a three-game series on Thursday night.
The loss snaps Augusta's three-game winning streak and it took a win away from Mike Kickham, who fired six scoreless innings for the GreenJackets. In the no decision, Kickham scattered six hits and walked two, but struck out five and got out of two innings through double play balls.
Leading 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Dunnington walked the leadoff hitter and allowed four straight singles as the Sand Gnats cut the lead to two. Darrell Ceciliani and Robbie Shields picked up the run-scoring hits off Dunnington. After striking out Cory Vaughn with the bases loaded for the inning's first out, Dunnington was relieved by Ryan Bradley.
Bradley struck out Rafael Fernandez for the second out of the inning, but threw a wild pitch on his first offering to Aderlin Rodriguez to bring the tying run home from third. Things got worse for Bradley as Rodriguez singled home the remaining baserunners to give the Gnats a 5-3 edge before Edward Concepcion got the last out of the inning.
The GreenJackets didn't put up much of a threat after that, stranding a runner at third in the eighth and going down in order in the ninth. Josh Edgin struck out two GreenJackets in the ninth to earn his 13th save of the season.
Augusta led early, getting a run in the second on a two-out single by Joel Weeks and another in the third on a Wilfredo Tovar throwing error. Rafael Rodriguez singled home a third run in the seventh inning but was thrown out at the plate after Weeks' second two-out single of the game, leaving the lead at 3-0.
Dunnington (1-2) allowed all five runs on four hits and a walk - retiring just one of the six hitters he faced. Angel Cuan (5-1) threw two scoreless, hitless innings to get the win for Savannah.
The GreenJackets look to start a new winning streak on Friday with Gaspar Santiago (1-1, 4.86) taking the mound against Greg Peavey (5-2, 3.27). First pitch from Savannah will come at 7:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
The GreenJackets return home on Sunday to open a four-game series with the Lexington Legends. First pitch from Lake Olmstead Stadium comes at 5:35 p.m.
