
Gnats Swat GreenJackets with Five-Run Seventh Thursday

SAVANNAH, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to upend the Augusta GreenJackets 5-3 Thursday evening in front of 2,810 fans at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats (33-26) are seven games over .500 for the first time in 2011.
With the win, the Gnats dropped their magic number to clinch the first half title against the second-place Greenville Drive to seven with ten games to play.
In a 3-3 game in the bottom of the seventh inning, 3B Aderlin Rodriguezfisted a single into shallow right field, driving home two runs to put the Gnats ahead 5-3. Rodriguez finished 2-4.
Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the bottom three hitters in the Gnats' order, 1B Sam Honeck, SS Wilfredo Tovar and 2B Luis Nieves loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. CF Darrell Ceciliani brought home Honeck with the first Gnats' run of the night with a clean single to right field. Tovar scored the second Savannah run on Robbie Shields' infield hit along the third base line. Then Nieves scampered home with the tying run on a wild pitch from Augusta reliever Ryan Bradleyduring the first pitch of Rodriguez's at-bat.
Ceciliani and Tovar both extended hitting streaks to eight straight games in the Gnats' win. Ceciliani was 3-5 with a double. Tovar was 3-4 with a double from the #8 spot in the Savannah batting order.
The GreenJackets (26-34) scored single runs in the second, third and sixth innings against Savannah starter Gonzalez Germen to build a 3-0 lead.
Savannah reliever Angel Cuan held the GreenJackets off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings to pick up his fifth win of the year. Josh Edgin worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save. Edgin has not allowed a run in any of his last 13 appearances.
The Gnats will hand the ball to RHP Greg Peavey (5-2, 3.27) against LHP Gaspar Santiago (1-1, 4.86) Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
