RiverDogs Drop Hillcats 8-7
June 16, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Charleston RiverDogs evened up the series at two games apiece after holding off the Hillcats 8-7 on Friday night.
The Hillcats trailed the entirety of the game but kept clawing back but could never jump out in front. Pres Cavenaugh did his best to carry the Hillcats with two home runs of his own, but the solo shots did minimal damage by the time the Charleston bullpen shut things down.
Charleston scored four in the second inning as they pounced on Alonzo Richardson and rattled him after he got the first two outs of the inning. Lynchburg struck back in the bottom of the frame as Cavenaugh picked up his first home run of his professional career on a solo shot to right field. The Hillcats would tack on one more in the third as Jose Devers would touch home on an Angel Genao line drive single.
Charleston scored two in the top of the fourth inning as Cooper Kinney drove home Chandler Simpson and Estanli Castillo to regain the four-run lead.
It would not last long as Lynchburg plated three runs in the bottom of the frame to get the deficit to one. Zac Fascia scored on a bases loaded walk to Juan Benjamin before a fielding error allowed Jose Devers to plate Jordan Brown. Wuilfredo Antunez picked up an RBI of his own on a sacrifice fly to score Jose Pastrano.
The top of the fifth would see the RiverDogs extend their lead a little further as Estanli Castillo picked up two RBI's on a single to center field.
With the Hillcats down by three, Pres Cavenaugh delivered a second solo home run to cut the deficit down to two. His second was a majestic shot over the right field wall that just stayed inside the foul pole. Later in the inning, Fascia picked up his third triple on the season, driving home Bubba Filia to move the score to it's eventual final.
From the sixth inning on, it was the bullpen that carried most of the work. Neither team would crack the scoreboard again for the final four innings as the relievers dominated through the lineups.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lynchburg could never get anything going as they dropped game four of the series.
The RiverDogs and Hillcats will square off for game five on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks are scheduled to follow the conclusion of the ballgame.
