June 16, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
One night after blasting three home runs, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans were blanked 2-0 by the Fredericksburg Nationals on Friday evening. With the loss, the Birds dropped to 36-25 as the Nationals improved to 29-30. Friday night was filled with fans of the Nickelodeon show Paw Patrol as a crowd of over 6,000 came to see cast members Chase and Skye at the ballpark.
All three hits were singles for the Pelicans as Parker Chavers (1-4), Moises Ballesteros (1-4), and Cristian Hernandez (1-3) accounted for the only offense. The Pelicans had just one runner in scoring position all night.
Despite a career-high six-inning outing, starter Nick Hull (3-1) took the loss after allowing a solo home run but striking out four. Jose Romero followed with one earned run in his 1 1/3 innings with one walk allowed and two strikeouts. Myrtle Beach walked just one in the loss.
Off only four hits, the Nationals used the power of Daylen Lile (1-3, HR, RBI) with his solo home run in the sixth. Elijah Green (1-4, RBI) brought home the second run on an RBI single in the eighth.
It was just the second shutout win for Fredericksburg as reliever Kevin Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win by retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced with just one hit allowed and five strikeouts. Starter Jarlin Susana tossed four scoreless frames with just one strikeout. Holden Powell earned the save by shutting down the Birds in the final two innings.
Pitching took control through the first five innings before the Nationals took the lead in the sixth. With one out and a 1-0 count, Lile hit a home run to left field for his fifth of the season to break the scoreless tie. It was the third homer for the Nationals this week.
Fredericksburg added one more insurance run in their half of the eighth. Johzan Oquendo came out of the bullpen with a runner on second and struck out the first batter he faced. After throwing a wild pitch to move the runner to third, Green hit a two-out single on a line-drive that fell in center field to extend the lead to 2-0.
Myrtle Beach and Fredericksburg will continue the series on Saturday night with first pitch at 6:35 p.m.
