Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- Charleston RiverDogs shortstop C. J. Henry was a key part of the New York Yankees' trade with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday that sent right fielder Bobby Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle to New York.
Henry was pulled from the lineup Sunday before Charleston's game against the Lexington Legends resumed play following a suspension of Saturday night's contest due to rain. At the time, Henry was a baserunner on third and before the game continued, pitcher Zach Kroenke was inserted as a pinch-runner.
The 20-year-old Henry was informed of the trade by Yankees' Director of Player Personnel Pat Roessler, who currently doubles as the RiverDogs' manager.
At the time of the trade, Henry, the Yankees No. 1 pick (17th overall) in 2005, had played in 76 games and was batting .237. He registered 19 doubles, three triples, two home runs, scored 35 times and drove home 33 runs.
Henry drew 32 walks, struck out 86 times and was successful in stealing 14 of 17 bases. Defensively, he was charged with 25 errors as a shortstop.
A native of Oklahoma City, OK, Henry was the highest draft choice made by the Yankees since 1993. At 6'3 and 205 pounds, the right-hander was the '05 Oklahoma high school player of the year and was named by Baseball America as a first team high school All-American. Prior to this season, Baseball America named Henry the "Best Athlete" in the Yankees' farm system.
In Henry's professional debut with the Yankees' Gulf Coast squad, he batted .249 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 48 games played. He was honored by Baseball America by being named the Yankees' fourth-best prospect entering this season.
