
RiverDogs and Hot Rods Split Double-Dip, 6-2, 5-4

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs split a double-dip with the Bowling Green Hot Rods after a five-run sixth inning seized a 6-2 Game 1 victory for the Dogs and then three costly errors in lead to a 5-4 defeat to the Hot Rods in Game 2 of the doubleheader in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 4,242 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark.
With the split, the RiverDogs are 20-16 on the season while the Hot Rods remain at .500 with an 18-18 mark.
The Hot Rods captured an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second frame in Game 1 when Michael Sheridan reached on an infield single and then dashed around the bases when Kyeong Kang doubled to left-center field for the game's first run.
Bowling Green added to its lead to 2-0 in the home half of the fourth inning when Sheridan smacked a solo home run over the right-center field fence for his third of the season.
The RiverDogs cut into the Hot Rods lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Ray Kruml lined a single to left-center and then moved to second after David Adams' single to left-center. Following a fielder's choice advanced Kruml to third, Corban Joseph laced a double to center that plated Kruml for Charleston's first run.
Charleston plated five runs and seized a commanding 6-2 advantage in the top of the seventh when Addison Maruszak drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner Carmen Angelini then stole second and then scampered home when Dan Brewer cracked a double to right-center. Kruml followed with a double to right-center that plated Brewer. Adams added a third consecutive double to right-center that scored Kruml. Abraham Almonte singled to right-center that allowed Adams to score and then Almonte advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Joseph drew a walk and then advanced to second when Almonte was caught stealing third before Mesa singled to short that scooted Joseph to third. Neall French singled to right-center that scored Joseph for the inning's fifth run.
Charleston reliever Brad Rulon (2-1) pitched 1.2 shutout innings as he scattered a three hits and struck out one for the victory while Pat Venditte, professional baseball's lone ambidextrous pitcher, earned his tenth save when he induced Henry Wrigley into a force out to end the game.
Bowling Green reliever Jamie Bagley (0-2) suffered the loss after he allowed five earned runs on five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings pitched.
The Hot Rods seized an early 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second of game two when Klang doubled to right-center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Justin Reynolds reached on a fielding error by Joseph.
Bowling Green rolled to a 4-0 lead in the home half of the third when Jeremy Beckham singled up the middle and then advanced to second when Mike Lyon was charged on a fielding error on Anthony Scelfo's groundball. After a double steal put the runners in scoring position, Tim Beckham drew a walk to load the bases. Jake Jefferies singled to right-center that scored Beckham and Scelfo while Beckham dashed to third. Wrigley lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Beckham.
Charleston cut into Bowling Green's lead, 4-2, in the top of the fourth when Melky Mesa drew a leadoff walk and then raced home when Almonte lined a triple to the right-center field gap. French followed with a groundout that plated Almonte.
The Hot Rods added a fifth run, 5-2, in the bottom of the fourth when Reynolds reached on a second fielding error by Lyon, stole second and third before he sprinted home when starter Manny Banuelos uncorked a wild pitch.
The RiverDogs crept to a 5-3 deficit in the top of the fifth when Angelini reached on an infield single and then raced home after Almonte doubled to left.
Charleston scored a run and gave a valiant effort in the top of the seventh before Josh Satow shut the door on the RiverDogs for the 5-4 Hot Rods victory and earned his second save of the season.
Banuelos (1-1) earned the hard luck defeat in Game 2 as he surrendered three hits, five runs (two earned), one walk, and six strikeouts in four innings pitched.
Bowling Green starter Frank De Los Santos (3-2) tallied the victory after he allowed three runs in five innings pitched as he scattered five hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.
Charleston and Bowling Green will battle in Game 3 of their four-game series Sunday at 2:05 p.m. as the RiverDogs will send right-hander Brett Marshall (1-3,, 5.34) to the mound while the Hot Rods counter with righty Joseph Cruz (3-2, 2.53).
