Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - The Hickory Crawdads defeated the Lake County Captains, 5-3, in a rain-shortened, five-inning ball game before 2,468 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium Saturday night. The rain began pouring down with two out in the bottom of the fifth, leading to a 25-minute delay before the game was called by the umpires.
The Crawdads (18-17) cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run by 2B Erik Morrison over the left field wall, plating DH Mike Hollander as well as himself. With the homer, Morrison extended his hitting streak to 11 games, the longest streak of the season by any Crawdad. Hickory added to the lead with a run in the second, as C Doug Hogan doubled home LF Timmy Rodriguez to make it 3-0 through two.
The Captains (16-18) came within a run of tying the game with a pair of tallies against RHP Carlos Pimentel (2-1, 3.93) in the top of the third. However, Hickory plated a run in the bottom of the fourth to move back ahead by multiple runs, as Rodriguez drew a walk, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on an error on a Hogan ground ball, making it 4-2.
CF Delvi Cid led off the top of the fifth with a single for Lake County and would score later in the inning on a fielder's choice hit into by 2B Karexon Sanchez against Pimentel, to again bring the Captains within a run, 4-3. However, Pimentel got out of the inning with the lead intact and the Crawdads added another tally in the bottom half before the rain picked up.
Morrison delivered his second hit and third RBI of the contest with a single, scoring SS Jake Kaase in the home half of the fifth inning to make it 5-3. After a 3B Matt West single later in the inning, the rain began to pour down and the tarp was pulled, leading to the delay and eventually the game being called, as the Crawdads won 5-3. Pimentel earned the victory and gets credit for a complete game, while RHP Alexander Perez (2-1, 2.09) was tagged with the loss for Lake County.
