West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps salvaged the final game of their four-game series with a 6-2 win over the South Bend Cubs on a Memorial Day Monday afternoon at Four Winds Field.
The Whitecaps snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, and continue their dominance in day games this season, featuring a 16-4 record.
Starter Matt Manning labored through a nearly 30-pitch first inning, issuing three walks including one to force home South Bend's first run when Nelson Velasquez was given a free pass to open the scoring. In the third, Jordan Pearce and Rey Rivera teamed up for a pair of run-scoring singles to give West Michigan a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, Rivera tacked on another RBI-single as part of a two-run frame to expand the "Caps lead to 4-1. After South Bend scored a run in the fifth, a Cubs throwing error allowed Joey Morgan to score and bring the score to 5-2. Cole Peterson scored on a passed ball in the ninth to increase the lead to 6-2, ending the scoring in the ballgame.
"Caps reliever Felix Viloria (1-0) allowed just one run in 2.2 innings while striking out four to earn his first win with the club. Manning started for the Whitecaps, and while only allowing one run, he struggled with his command in walking five batters with five strikeouts in four innings. Cubs starter Javier Assad (4-2) took his second loss of the year after allowing four runs in five frames. The win boosts the Whitecaps record to 27-23, while the Cubs fall to 22-27. Pearce, Rivera, Colby Bortles and Joey Morgan each had two hits in the contest to lead the way in the victory.
